A lot of people (both children and adults) choose to consume gummy vitamins especially if they find it difficult to consume tablets. Gummies contain a combination of several ingredients such as vitamins and minerals, B-vitamins, calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium, vitamin C and E, and other target-specific vitamins. We reached out to Janvi Chitalia, Integrative Gut Microbiome Health Coach and Functional Medicine Nutritionist, and asked her to share her expert inputs on the side-effects of consuming gummies, if any. Read on to know all that she shared!
Side-Effects Of Eating Gummy Vitamins
1. Most gummies have colouring agents and other flavoring agents that can give rise to allergies or allergic reactions in certain people. It can impact the immune system and lower its resilience.
2. Gummies are often found to have been overeaten due to interesting flavours and tastes, and may cause digestive symptoms such as nausea, loose stools, gas and bloating.
3. When people with conditions such as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth or candida overgrowth consume multivitamin gummies, the sugar in the gummies can ferment and cause gastric symptoms, as well as an increase in candida or fungal overgrowth. It also causes dysbiosis in the gut.
4. The RDAs of the components that can be added to a gummy may also be lower than the normal need for each dosage. Taking magnesium, zinc, collagen or glutathione as individual supplements may be more beneficial than taking them together.
5. People who are watching their weight or those on a fat-reduction program, should avoid gummies owing to excessive sucrose, maltodextrin and other sugar or starch-related substances, which may appear to be hidden elements but can contribute to obesity and insulin resistance.
