There is a child in all of us. But, as the time passes and we grow older, we forget to enjoy life like we did as children. Before we dive into how you can reconnect with your inner child, it is important to understand the concept of the inner child. Your inner child is a part of who you are. This part of you contains the earliest memories you made in your life. It forms the essence of who you become and how you express emotions as an adult.
Reconnecting with your inner child gives you new insight and awareness about yourself. It gives you the opportunity to heal on a profound level. Your inner child, like all young children, longs to connect with you, to be recognised, acknowledged, and cherished. However, because not all childhood memories are pleasant, a part of you as an adult refuses to connect with your inner child. As a result, there will be resistance. However, to live your best life, it is an exercise you can’t put off.
So, we reached out to Ayushi Mathur, Mindset Mentor, and Founder & CEO of Pickbetter Marketing, and asked her to share a few ways we can connect with our inner child. Read on to know all that she shared!
1. Express Yourself Honestly
As we grow older, society norms force us to hold back our thoughts. We become more reserved in fear of rejection. But do you remember how brutally honest we used to be as children? Having no need to fit in and saying it like it is?
Even as an adult, your authentic self deserves to be heard. It deserves to be seen for who it is. So, instead of holding back on expressing your honest opinions and doing the things you love to do, give yourself the freedom to express openly. It will not only help you feel better but also help you build relationships with people who share the same values as you.
2. Play More
As children, all our problems washed away the minute we went out to play with our friends in the garden. No one thought about homework, projects, or exams! We just played and lived in the moment. Fast forward to today, anytime we have any stress in our lives, all we do is either keep spiraling in our own thoughts or indulge in escapism.
Everyone needs to break free occasionally. Run around in an open field, go play games in an arcade, dance silly with friends or just laugh freely! Adult playfulness has been shown to reduce work stress, increase creativity and make you happier and healthier.
3. Spend Time With Children
What better way to reconnect with your inner child than to spend time with children? If you don’t have children, you can spend time with your relatives’ kids. Spending time with children will give you a fresh perspective on life and be a great reminder that sometimes, it’s okay to let go of all your worries and just indulge in the present moment.
4. Be Inquisitive About Everything
Have you noticed how curious children are about everything around them? They want to know how everything works. Instead of trying to be in control all the time, try being inquisitive about all that’s around you and within you. Ask yourself important as well as childish questions. It’ll help you break the negative patterns of overthinking and self-doubt.
Reconnecting with your inner child takes patience and persistence. It might not always be easy. But if you’re able to embrace all parts of yourself, including the wounded inner child, your life will become lighter, more joyful and fulfilling.
