According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day due to poverty. 10.7% of the world’s population lived on less than US$1.90 a day according to worldbank.org. With such heartbreaking stats, it’s almost cruel to waste food. We take for granted everything we get in abundances like food, clothing and shelter. But, let’s not do that anymore. Here are a few ways you could manage food wastage in your kitchen.
1. Make A List
Instead of buying everything you like in a grocery store, make a list only of the things you absolutely need and nothing additional. This way you will not waste the extra things you bring.
2. Track Your Wastage
If you’ve been noticing frequent wastage in your kitchen, start making notes and tracking the amount. This will make you work backwards in understanding the quantities you should or should not buy.
3. Check Product Labels
We mostly don’t even check the expiration dates on packaged products. Then once they expire, we forget to clean them out. Start checking those labels of the products in your fridge.
4. Declutter Your Cabinets & Fridge
As mentioned above, check every product’s labels to see which ones have expired and let them go. Declutter your fridge and remove everything that is spoilt or going to expire and use those products first.
5. Reuse The Extras
If you’ve made extra food like aloo bhaji or something like that, make sure to revamp it into another fun dish (maybe like a paratha) and consume it before it goes bad.
6. Calculate Your Food Needs
If you calculate the number of people you need to cook for, it’ll be easier to shop accordingly without any wastage. So, make sure to calculate your ration the next time you hit the supermarket.
7. Donate The Extras
If there’s a tonne of leftovers, donate it to someone instead of throwing it out. Keep it out for dogs or cats on the street or give it to someone in need.
So, the next time you notice frequent wastage of food at home, refer to these to avoid throwing it out.
