The question that has been raging around Dhurandhar, and gained momentum in the run-up to its release, is Ranveer Singh‘s character is based on decorated Army officer Major Mohit Sharma? Speculation kicked in within moments of the film’s trailer, which dropped hints that the story is inspired by real incidents. Viewers began tracing possible connections between the movie and the actual covert operations conducted by Indian forces during the 2000s.

Is Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar Character Based On Major Rohit Sharma?

Fans felt they found similarities between various onscreen personas and known persons from Indian counter-terror history. Comparisons floated on social media saying R. Madhavan’s character plays Ajit Doval, Akshaye Khanna plays Rehman Dakait, Sanjay Dutt plays Chaudhry Aslam Khan, and Arjun Rampal plays Ilyas Kashmiri. With the name not being revealed for Ranveer Singh’s protagonist, many concluded that the film was based on Major Mohit Sharma, the officer who infiltrated Hizbul Mujahideen under the alias Iftikhar Bhatt.

Online, this theory quickly spread as a discussion thread focused on the frame-by-frame breakdown in the trailer.

Aditya Dhar Reveals There Is No Biopic Connection

Amid the guessing game, filmmaker Aditya Dhar issued a statement. He said Dhurandhar is not dramatizing Major Mohit Sharma’s story, and the character speculation is incorrect. The director further added that if he ever decides to do a full-length feature on Sharma, he would get it only with the consent of the latter’s family and would do it as a tribute to keep the memory of the soldier alive respectfully.

Dhar explained that any future biopic would be done only with the consent of the loved ones of the late officer, maintaining its accuracy and dignity.

Maj. Mohit Sharma remains one of India’s most treasured military heroes. He was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra in 2009 for his undercover work in Kashmir and Pakistan, regarded as one of the most courageous intelligence infiltrations of the time.

The film releases worldwide on 5th December 2025, and curiosity about its real-life connections has only heightened the excitement.
