The film is set in the backdrop of the reign of King Louis XIII, where the French are facing a new war of religion. The Protestants have England’s support and are looking to expand their powers over the catholic realm. Amidst all of this Chaos, are three musketeers, who navigate through friendships, love and most importantly, power. The film is based on the iconic novel by Alexandre Dumas. This 19th Century classic has two parts to it, with the second one releasing in December. This part of the film is called D’Artagnan and is based on him, a fierce and relentless and very keen on joining the Musketeers clique. The film stars François Civil, Vincent Cassel, Romain Duris, and Pio Marmaï in pivotal roles and is directed by Martin Bourboulon
After an altercation with the King’s men, D’Artagnan is made a part of the musketeers as Arthos, one of the main musketeers is taken in by the King’s guards as a murder suspect. These three men have to now join forces to find out the real culprit and free their friend. The humour is very French and fitting for a period drama. A few more snarky exchanges would’ve held my attention for longer, as some scenes in the middle of the film start to lose momentum and eventually lose my attention as well. The set design however takes you back to the 1900s and the actors looking convincingly good for their roles. To spice it up, we also have a whirlwind of old-school romance that really brings forth the old-world charm. Another box it definitely ticks off is the high bromance quotient. The film makes for a great lazy Sunday watch if period dramas pique your interest.
It surely makes for a darker interpretation of the novel from which it was adapted. The film which was originally made in French is now available in cinemas, dubbed in English.
