World Health Day: We Ask The Expert About Hydration, Gut Health & Skincare

Zahabiya Ali

World Health Day is celebrated every year on April 7th to raise awareness about global health issues and promote healthy living. The day was first established in 1948 by the World Health Organization (WHO) to commemorate the founding of the organization. It provides an opportunity for individuals, communities, and organizations to come together and work towards improving health outcomes for everyone. As we navigate the best ways to maintain our health and focus on building a strong core, the myriad of information may seem like a tangle. Under our beauty and wellness radar, we onboarded Tanisha Bawa, Certified Nutrition Coach, Founder of TAN|365 to talk about hydration, gut health and skincare.

We are well aware of the fact that hydration is essential for maintaining good health and proper bodily function. The human body is made up of around 60% water, and every cell, tissue, and organ in the body requires water to function correctly. Hydration is also important for maintaining good gut health. Water helps keep the digestive system functioning properly by promoting the movement of food through the intestines and preventing constipation. Staying hydrated also includes consuming fruits with rich water content, like watermelons and cucumbers. Drinking coconut water has multifaceted benefits and is loved by Athiya Shetty too!

There is a growing body of research indicating that there is a relationship between gut health and skin health. The gut and the skin are two of the body’s largest organs and are interconnected in several ways. Inflammation in the gut can lead to inflammation in the skin, which can contribute to skin problems such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis. The gut plays a critical role in absorbing nutrients from food, which can impact the health of the skin.

For instance, a deficiency in certain vitamins and minerals can lead to skin problems. The gut is home to trillions of bacteria, which play an important role in maintaining overall health. Research suggests that imbalances in gut bacteria can contribute to skin problems such as acne and rosacea. As an important part of the immune system a healthy gut can help support a healthy immune response. This, in turn, can promote skin health.

Is there actually a specified amount of water everyone should consume?
“Our body is made up of 60%-70% of water depending on age. On account of various physical
activities performed through the day, this water content is lost through breathing, perspiring
and urinating. Hence, to make up for this loss and keep yourself hydrated, consuming at least 2-
three liters of fluids is essential”, says Tanisha Bawa

How essential is hydration for gut health?
“With regards to constipation, when you consume water, it is drawn by your bowels to aid in
moving the food through your stomach and intestines towards the colon. However, if the water
levels in your body are insufficient, this process can be delayed which in turn would cause
digestive discomfort and bloating.
Constipation comes with its own set of residual health concerns. When constipated, the body is
unable to effectively get rid of toxins and the excess estrogen hormones. As a result, this is re-
circulated in your system causing your estrogen hormone to become dominant leading to
hormonal imbalances.
Water helps to ease the digestion process as it assists the acids and enzymes in breaking down
the food efficiently. If your system is running low on water or fluids, it poses a great difficulty for the body in transporting the food through your digestive system which can, in turn, cause intestinal
inflammation.
A leaky gut is a condition where the tight junctions of the gut lining loosen up thus allowing
harmful substances, such as toxins, bacteria, and undigested food particles to flow into your
bloodstream. If this gut lining stays inflamed for too long, it can cause intestinal permeability.
Keeping yourself hydrated can reduce this inflammation in your gut”, explains Bawa.
