The monsoon brings with it many cosy thoughts, we dream of sleeping in and snuggling in our favourite quilt. It’s also a great time to be lazy and lounge about the house in PJs with a cup of our most-loved hot beverage. While all these feelings are wonderful, if you have to venture outside in the rain it can be quite a hellish feeling. It can also totally mess with your hair care routine.
This can make some of us dread this season altogether. The worst part about the rains is how it can destroy your perfectly styled hair in a matter of seconds. It squashes your dreams of looking flawless overnight. But what If I told you that with the proper hair care you could actually have manageable hair? So we reached out to Ms Asha Hariharan, Education Director of Enrich for her expert input. Read on for more!
Here are some tricks to help your mane stay in top condition during the monsoon:
1. Shampoo your hair at least thrice a week. Use a mild, hydrating shampoo so it does not strip the hair of its natural oils. This way you get gently cleansed hair.
2. Try to fit in a water rinse between your days scheduled for shampooing. This will ensure your scalp is clean without drying it up. Add a tablespoon of vinegar as it will soften your hair and kill bacteria too.
3. Nothing kills a hairstyle like humidity. Imagine the natural oils of the scalp mixed with heat and sweat. Sound like the perfect recipe for a fungal growth that can make your scalp terribly itchy. To battle this, once a week one can apply anti-fungal ointment to their scalp. Let it sit overnight and wash off next morning.
4. Don’t forget a weekly moisture mask post a shampoo. Masks are much lighter than conditioners so they won’t weigh your hair down and make your hair look flat or oily. They also come with powerful hydrating ingredients which can help repair and reconstruct your hair from the inside!
5. Visit your salon for a scalp exfoliation treatment which gently removes the dead skin from your scalp. This refreshes the skin by resurfacing new skin that breathes and has enhanced blood circulation to strengthen the scalp.
6. A hair oil massage is great for your hair but not your scalp. A little oil to facilitate the massage is fine, but if you add too much you need double the shampoo to remove it thus leaving your scalp dry and itchy. All you need to keep in mind is to oil the ends and length of your hair and wash off with a mild shampoo.
7. Never underestimate the power of a hair spa treatment to balance, calm and strengthen your hair. A treatment like this can revive your hair health and make it shiny too.
8. Try not to load up on setting and styling products because they cause buildup in the hair. This will eventually leave your hair feeling lifeless and oily, especially during the monsoon. Sometimes even your regular shampoo is not good enough at removing the grime. Causing you to wash your hair several times thus drying out your scalp.
9. Eat foods that are rich in Vitamin C and zinc to help with scalp and hair health.
10. Leave your hair loose once in a while, especially when wet. If you constantly bun your hair up you increase the chances of a fungal or bacterial growth on the scalp. Sometimes the best thing you can do for your hair is to let it breathe.
