Do you look at celebrities like Jennifer Lopez in awe and wonder how they don’t look like they’ve aged at all. Do you then obsessively Google what these celebs do to keep their youthful charms intact? And even after we’ve found the answers to our burning questions about skin rejuvenation we worry if we can afford any of these treatments. We’re certainly lucky because with access to the internet we also know the who’s who of dermatology. The thing to know is that beauty enhancement is attainable without having to get botox and fillers.
However, these treatments can only enhance what you already have, so it’s important to start with the basics and invest in a good skincare routine that you will follow religiously day and night. So we asked Dr Yuti Nakhwa, Consulting Dermatologist and Cosmetologist at Global Hospital for her expert advice on skin rejuvenation.
Here are 5 things you ought to be doing to help further skin rejuvenation:
1) Hydrate
Your skin needs hydration to glow and dry dehydrated skin tends to look dull. Drinking lots of water when it’s hot and humid outside is paramount. Certain products can do wonders for your skin like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. Hyaluronic acid is hygroscopic in nature so you need to apply it after washing your face so that it gets absorbed well. It even has a great hydrating and plumping effect. This can boost the look of one’s skin more when injected directly into the skin. These skin boosters hydrate and rejuvenate your skin from within for that dewy complexion.
Niacinamide is a great molecule for hydration for acne-prone skin. Using it after washing your face can help in hydrating and smoothening the inflamed and irritated pimple-prone skin.
2) Exfoliate
The most important step to achieving youthful skin is to exfoliate from time to time. Exfoliation means the expulsion of dead cells with the help of a granular substance or tool. Our skin has the ability to naturally shed skin every 30 days but some dead cells don’t shed. This can cause clogged pores that usually result in breakouts. Regular exfoliation will ensure this doesn’t happen and will increase the production of collagen in this skin, which minimises the appearance of fine lines, and sagging and is the key to glowing skin.
You can do it in the comfort of your house by using a gentle exfoliating cleanser regularly or you can visit a dermatologist for simple procedures like microdermabrasion or dermaplaning where dead cells are manually removed. If one’s skin is dry, then a hydra facial can be done, where the skin is infused and hydrated along with dermabrasion. One can safely do these procedures once a month
3)Sun Protection
Needless to say, there is enough evidence to prove that proper sun protection helps prevent premature ageing. So if you just want to continue looking as gorgeous as you do then invest in a good sunscreen! It’s more important than gold or diamonds, you’ll see!
4) Actives
We all need a good dose of our vitamins and acids. Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid) for a brightened complexion, Vitamin A (Retinol, Retinaldehyde) for fine lines wrinkles, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, kojic acid and the list goes on! Let your dermatologist help you decide which active will benefit you the most! Layering too many can do more harm than good!
5) Antioxidants
Glutathione is a very powerful antioxidant molecule that can detoxify radical damage to your skin. It adds to one’s natural glow as it can brighten the skin with prolonged usage and improves skin texture over time. Antioxidant drips or detox drips are some of the best-kept secrets to your favourite celebrities’ beauty routine.
Here are some skin rejuvenation treatments that celebrities use:
- Laser Toning or a Photo Facial that is done using Q-Switched Nd: YAG Laser shatters fragments of pigmentation, so it brightens the skin over time. It even minimises the open pores and makes your skin even toned.
- Treatments using radiofrequency energy like Thermage can help smooth, tighten and contour skin for an overall younger-looking appearance. Exilis and Endymed treat wrinkles, skin laxity and excessive fat.
- Ulthera or HIFU (high intensity focus ultrasound) are alternatives to a cosmetic face lift. This procedure lifts and tones the face, eyes, neck, chin, brow and improves lines using only ultrasound waves.
- Microbotox is a new quick lunchtime procedure to decrease pore size and to improve skin texture.
When it comes to choosing the right product or treatment, it’s important to understand how the treatment will benefit you! Not everything works for everyone and not everyone benefits from everything! So it is imperative for you to seek out the right advice before you invest your time and money in trying out these treatments.
Get a proper consultation, understand your needs, set realistic expectations and select a treatment that fits your budget. It is ideal to schedule treatments at intervals to maintain and improve your skin. Skin rejuvenation can be a lot of work but once you commit to it, you will see a major improvement in your skin.
