Music is something that we all love and listen to, whether it is to dance, appreciate the lyrics, make the workday less boring, or even to get better sleep. Music can help us feel relaxed and aid our ability to fall asleep and get better sleep. But how does it work and what are the benefits? We spoke to Dhruv Patel and Dr. Batul Patel, Founder of Ruhgu to know the benefits of music for deep sleep, and here’s what they had to say:
Music & Brain Waves
To know more about music and its effect on sleep, you first need to understand how brain waves indicate our brain state.
There are five widely recognized brain waves, namely gamma, beta, alpha, theta, and delta. When you are awake and concentrating, gamma waves are active at 25-140 Hz. When active, beta waves take over at 12-35 Hz. As you get more relaxed, alpha and theta are active at 8-12 Hz and 4-8 Hz respectively. When you sleep, the delta waves are prominent at 0.5-4 Hz.
For years, scientists have observed the effects of sound on brains. When exposed to sound waves at certain frequencies, brain wave patterns adjust to those frequencies. This is the premise of using music for sleep. These sounds are specially catered to our brain’s lower frequency. As you hear these sounds, a set of triggers start in your body, leading you to wind down faster and get significantly better and longer sleep.
What Kind Of Music Is Best For Sleep?
The music you listen to during the day may not always be optimal for sleep. However, if your playlist does include soothing songs, they probably can help you get to sleep. The main thing you need to be aware of is tempo; the slower the song, the better. So the next time you find yourself struggling to fall asleep, turn to music and let it do its magic. We’d suggest you create a playlist of slow, peaceful songs and sounds that you can play when you’re struggling to sleep. There are many apps too available that have dedicated sleep music and sleep meditations to help you get deep sleep. Choose from an array of calming instrumental music, audio stories, guided meditation, and more and see what works best for you.
