Mental disorders can show up differently in different people, depending on the degree to which symptoms interfere with daily functioning. For some people, symptoms may be so severe that they are unable to work or focus on anything. Others may be able to function relatively normally, but still experience significant emotional distress or impaired social functioning. Few may only have mild symptoms that have little impact on their lives.
Ultimately, each person’s experience of mental illness is unique and should be respected as such. It is important to remember that even people with mild symptoms can benefit from treatment. Mental disorders are serious and can cause major disruptions in a person’s life if left untreated. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental illness, don’t hesitate to reach out for help. There is no shame in seeking treatment, and the sooner you get help, the better.
Mental disorders can present themselves in a variety of ways, and no two people will experience them in the same way. So we reached out to Dr. Chandni Tugnait, Psychotherapist, Life Coach, Business Coach, NLP Expert, Healer, Founder and Director of Gateway of Healing, and asked to share her expert insights on ways mental health can manifest itself in different people. Read on to know all that she shared!
1. Types Of Symptoms
It’s interesting to think about how symptoms of mental disorders can manifest themselves differently in different people. It’s almost as if the symptoms are tailor-made for the individual. For example, someone with OCD might obsessively wash their hands or organise their belongings in a certain way, while someone with PTSD might have flashbacks or nightmares. The list goes on and on. It’s fascinating to think about how the human brain can be so creative in its expression of mental illness. It’s also a reminder of how complex and individualised mental disorders can be.
Symptoms can vary not only from person to person, but can also differ from day to day or even moment to moment. This is one of the things that makes mental disorders so difficult to understand and treat. But it also reminds us that there is hope. Even if we don’t always know why symptoms show up the way they do, we can still offer support and care to those who are dealing with them.
2. Severity Of Symptoms
For some people, the symptoms may be so mild that they barely notice them. For others, the symptoms may be so severe that they interfere with their ability to function in everyday life. The severity of the symptoms can also fluctuate over time. For example, someone with a mild case of depression may only experience occasional bouts of low mood, while someone with a more severe case may experience debilitating sadness and despair daily.
3. Response To Treatment
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to treating mental disorders. Just as each person experiences these conditions differently, they will also respond to treatment in different ways. Some people may find that medication helps to ease their symptoms, while others may prefer to talk through their problems with a counsellor or therapist. Some may need a combination of different treatments to find relief. The important thing is to work with a mental health professional to figure out what works best for you. Everyone is different, and what works for one person may not work for another. But with the right treatment plan, you can begin to feel better and take steps towards recovery.
Each person’s experience of mental illness is unique, and it is important to remember that there is no one “right way” to describe a mental disorder. If you are concerned about your mental health, or the mental health of someone you know, it is important to seek professional help. A qualified mental health professional can assess symptoms and make a diagnosis, as well as provide information and support.
