8 Tricks To Calm A Crying Baby

Pooja Maheshwary

All babies cry—and that’s a good thing. How else would we know if an infant was cold, hungry, lonely or in pain? Traditionally, moms and dads have been encouraged to wait until the baby grows out of it. But, that’s easier said than done!

So, we reached out to Dr. Nishant Bansal, Consultant Neonatologist at Motherhood Hospital in Noida, and asked him to share some suggestions to calm a crying baby. Read on to know the tricks he shared!

1. Mother Nature can assist you

As adults, we sometimes require a brain breather to clear our head. Likewise, toddlers’ evolving minds require a similar approach. Embracing nature has shown to be a wonderful therapy for calming the mind. A 15-minute walk around the neighborhood or at a park, can assist in settling any mood change.

2. It’s about the smallest of details

Soothing your toddler through touch really helps. It’s a terrific idea to dance about, and snuggle and cradle your child. Skin touch almost immediately relaxes them and is also beneficial to their growth. It reminds them of when they were in their mother’s womb.

3. Get musical

Singing has always been beneficial for children. A made-up lullaby, especially for your toddler, nearly always works. Piano and jazz music is shown to help soothe children. Research also shows that music helps improve brain functions, mood and calms the mind instantly.

4. Exercise to keep you and your baby healthy

Exercising with your child helps strengthen the bond you share with them. It helps to divert the child’s attention from an activity, and what better way to do it than to exercise with your toddler while staying in shape!

5. Massages boost health

Massaging your toddlers’ feet, tummy and face helps them relax.  A shower and soothing lavender scents can help toddlers feel at ease any time.

6. Use toys

Toys help settle children. However, use eco-friendly toys as they’re safer, especially when the child chews or bites them.

7. Read to your child

Reading is one of the ways that children de-stress, particularly before bedtime. It enriches their lives by encouraging curiosity and stimulating their creativity. It also adds value to their life. It aids cognitive growth and memory from a young age. Some parents have a habit of reading to their children, and studies have shown that most toddlers who see their parents read will eventually do the same.

8. Listen with patience

Babies cry, period. It’s how they communicate, and it’s perfectly okay. We don’t always know why they’re crying or what they want, but with these methods, any baby will eventually relax. So, to all the mothers and fathers out there taking care of their newborn, patience is your best friend.
