Deepika Padukone is inducing some major curiousity in me for her character Alisha in Gehraiyaan. There perhaps is, a lot more to the film than what meets the eye at the trailer level. The actress recently shared an interesting reel on her Instagram page which mentions all her characters.
Check it out here.
While we look forward to see her in this all-new character in Gehraiyaan, here’s picking out some of DP’s other characters which have dived deep into our hearts.
Shantipriya/Sandy (Om Shanti Om)
It was so commendable for a debutant to pull off two contrasting characters in her first film itself. One still cannot get over the way she mouthed her dialogues like, ‘Ek Chutki Sindooor…’. Not to mention, how mesmerising the actress looked and the hearts she won. It all started with that wave of Shantipriya and there’s no stopping since then.
Veronica (Cocktail)
This was such change from the characters she’d played before that. Veronica was bold, emotional and said things as it is. So many layers she had that a different tone of emoting was needed perhaps, and Deepee pulled it off so beautifully that Veronica still remains etched in our memories.
Piku (Piku)
Piku was strong, vulnerable, funny and I’m kind of short of words for this character, also because of how good DP was in this. So subtle, yet impactful enough to leave such a strong mark. Her chemistry with Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan was heart-melting!
Mastani (Bajirao Mastani)
It was Mastani’s eyes that were enough to do the job, I feel. While she had some great dialogues. Deepika was so on-point with her expressions, strength and vulnerability both portrayed through her eyes that I doubt if anyone could play a better Mastani. And how drop-dead-gorgeous did she look!
Malti (Chhapaak)
This one is such a brave role for any actor to play and to have the courage to also produce such a film which could make an impact on so many people, is so amazing. She proved that, while she could look glamourous, she would even be convincing as an acid attack survivor. This character triggered such deep emotions in my heart and in all our hearts.
Rani Padmavati (Padmaavat)
Such a fierce character with the right amount of emotions – and DP was so pitch perfect. A queen indeed, off-screen and on-screen. She also got the Rajputana accent and look so correct. I was in awe of Rani Padmaavati, her beauty and her courage.
Apart from these, Meenamma from Chennai Express and Naina from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani deserve a special mention too. Not many actresses have been able to pull off comedy so well and Deepika was so good in the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani on the other hand, is a favourite, as the film in its entirety was amazing and just Ayan Mukherji’s narrative had my heart.
Now if you ask me, I wouldn’t be able to choose one favourite character amidst this brilliant body of work, and I’m sure it’s going to be a tough choice for all of you. Here’s hoping that the actress continues to give us more reasons to love her with Gehraiyaan and all her upcoming work.
