The trailer of Gehraiyaan is making me curious to dive deeper into the film. Of course, I’ll have to wait a little longer for that. But, one wonders, what would the film be like and how would the climax be, considering the fact that this Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ananya Panday-starrer deals with infidelity.
When our boss lady Malini Agarwal interviewed the cast of the film recently, she put up a very interesting question to director Shakun Batra, that, do situations like these deserve a happy ending?
Shakun Batra said,
“I don’t think only happily ever after makes for a good storytelling. I think you can have a very satisfying story without a happily ever after. Also I feel that as much as I enjoy movies that are meant to escape reality, I think revisiting reality can be way more powerful. So for me, that’s what it was. We were like, what if we chartered into this territory in a more real way, where would we end up? Then of course, you dramatise it, fictionalise it, you give it emotions and intensity and I just hope that the audiences connect to it.”
Batra was also asked how he approached the film in the sense that the audience empathises with the characters and not take sides from an Indian morality perspective.
He added,
“It’s just an intention you set before you start saying a story. Once you set the intention, then, every department – the writing, the editing, the cinematography – all of those departments have to go with the same lens. We were really sure early on, that this is obviously a topic (especially, for an Indian audience), that we have to be careful about. At the same time, we didn’t want to talk about infidelity under the garb of soulmate or true love because that’s done too many times. We were like, no! What if we don’t go into that direction? What if we talk about the grey zone? Then it was just every department coming in, contributing, sharing their thoughts and I’ve been very fortunate that everyone on this team is a dream team to make a film.”
Getting an insight into Shakun’s approach is definitely making me more excited for Gehraiyaan which is set to release on Amazon Prime Video on February 11.
