With kids’ skin being notoriously sensitive, finding products that suit their skin type can be a challenge. The epidermis is approximately 30% thinner in infants compared to adults. The epidermis is the topmost layer of our skin and the barrier that protects our bodies. This is the reason why our kids’ skin can easily dry out be prone to get infected if we use skincare laced with heavy chemicals and fragrances in cosmetics. We spoke to Dr. Samir Dalwai, a Developmental & Behavioural Pediatrician and Founder – Director of New Horizons Group, with experience of 25 years in the field of Pediatrics, to know more about the difference between Natural and Organic Skincare for kids and this is what he had to say:
- What kind of skincare products should be used for kids and the difference they can make in day-to-day life?
There’s a reason why we often say ‘as soft as a baby’s skin’. The outermost layer of a baby’s skin is 30% thinner than that of adults, making it very sensitive and porous, by which it absorbs anything that is applied. On the other hand, this also means that such delicate skin is easily prone to infections. There are a number of ways to protect a baby’s skin – right from gentle massages to choosing the right products.
As new parents, it can be quite daunting to pick something right. In addition to reading labels to understand ingredients, it is also important to check on certifications. Certified organic products use skin-friendly ingredients and processes while manufacturing. These certifications restrict the use of pesticides and other harmful and harsh chemicals during the entire manufacturing process through strict inspections and quality checks.
2. Differences it can make in day-to-day life
Better for the environment – Several new-age parents are constantly concerned about the kind of environment their children will grow up in. Using organic products that are more environmentally friendly has become a major focus.
Usage of synthetic ingredients – Many skincare products contain synthetic ingredients that have proven to be harmful to the baby in the short as well as long term. Organic products, on the other hand, are free of any type of synthetic ingredients thereby protecting the baby from rashes and infections.
Eliminates harmful chemicals on your baby’s skin – The baby’s skin is more delicate than that of an adult and easily absorbs things it comes in contact with. As skin products are directly applied and stay there till the next bath, it is advisable to reduce the overall chemical contact for your little one.
Gently hydrating the skin – A baby’s skin is prone to itchiness and dryness. Using baby products with organic and gentle ingredients can help hydrate the baby’s skin to its utmost comfort. Also, organic products do not clog the pores of the baby’s skin even after being applied several times a day. Keeping pores open is the key to removing toxins from the baby’s skin and allowing the skin to breathe and be healthy.
Healthy Growth – Babies need proper nutrients for healthy and consistent growth. Organic baby products can be a good source of these nutrients which helps in developing skin cells and vital nutrients. Various chemicals in inorganic baby care can, in fact, hinder the integrity of the skin protection making it easier for the baby to catch the infection.
3. What are natural products?
Natural products can be made of anything and everything that grows naturally or is found in nature. They are free from common chemicals like sulfates and parabens but their raw materials can be sprayed with fertilizers or insecticides in order to preserve them. There are no legal regulations or requirements for products to be called natural. Product makers could include only 0.01% of ingredients that are ‘natural’ to be able to market it as such.
4. What are organic products?
Organic products are grown and manufactured without using chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, etc., and are subjected to minimal processing to retain the naturally occurring properties of raw materials. These products don’t have ingredients that are genetically modified and are not tested on animals. Organic products are also subjected to rigorous announced and unannounced certification inspections by third-party inspectors to ensure that they are producing and processing organic products in a manner you and your family can trust.
5. Difference between natural products and organic products
– It is mandatory for organic products to have strict certifications including thorough inspections, while it’s not mandatory for natural products
– It is mandatory for organic products to use skin-friendly ingredients, while it’s not mandatory for natural products
– It is mandatory for organic products to source raw materials from organic farming methods (without using insecticides, pesticides, preservatives), while it’s not mandatory for natural products
– Genetically modified ingredients are strictly restricted in organic products, while it’s not necessarily restricted in natural products
– Use of toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers is strictly prohibited in the manufacturing of organic products while it can be used in natural products
