The ever-so entertaining combination of cricket and cinema seems to be riding high on Bollywood at the moment. With two such releases this month, and one just announced recently, another film has joined the bandwagon and increased the excitement of the cinema and cricket buff in me. Taapsee Pannu’s Shabaash Mithu, a biopic on the legendary Indian cricketer and captain Mithali Raj, was always an intriguing project for me from the word go, and now we have a release date for it.
Taking to social media to mark the iconic cricketer’s birthday today, the makers announced that the film will be arriving in theatres worldwide on February 4, 2022. The biopic has been one of the most-awaited film of Hindi cinema as it is the first time that a female Indian cricketer’s life is being brought on screen. With the laurels and achievements that are in Mithali’s credentials, it is sure going to be a worthy watch.
Check out the announcement:
Shabaash Mithu is a coming-of-age tale of women’s cricket in India as witnessed by one of the most successful woman cricketer the country has ever seen. It chronicles the highs and lows, setbacks and moments of euphoria of Mithali’s life with Taapsee stepping into her shoes on screen. The film also sees Vijay Raaz in a pivotal role.
Produced by Viacom18 Studios, and directed by Srijit Mukherji, Shabaash Mithu’s Creative Producer is Ajit Andhare, while the film is written by Priya Aven. It has been shot across various domestic and international locations, including the historic Lords cricket ground in the UK, to aptly bring alive Mithali’s iconic journey and her meteoric rise to the world stage.
Taapsee comes with a lot of appreciation as well as expectations behind her, since the actress has proved herself to be a force in the recent years. Thus, I expect no less than a historic performance from her, especially with an inspiring story like this. It’s great to see women’s cricket getting the representation in the media it deserves and I am really intrigued and curious to get to know the life story of a sportsperson who has represented India internationally with so much grace and aplomb.
