Besides religion, if there is something that people in India worship like a faith, it has to be cricket and cinema. So, combine the two together, and you have either a winner at hand or a lawsuit. We have two big films coming in next month that are combining the two, and one was just announced yesterday. Cinema has always been obsessed with sports but this sudden interest and inclination towards cricket satisfies the cinema buff as well as the cricket lover in me. Today, the trailer of Jersey was released and the Shahid Kapoor and Mrunal Thakur-starrer has all the chances of becoming a winner. But before I get into my thoughts, let’s take a look at the trailer.
Check out the trailer here:
Shahid was riding high on the success of Kabir Singh when it was announced that the actor was going to be a part of another Telugu remake, Jersey, where he’d be filling in Nani’s shoes. Following the announcement, I was excited yet sceptical if the actor would be able to match the success of Kabir Singh or maybe get restricted to South remakes only. But Jersey’s trailer shows you the new and evolved Shahid, who just plucks on your heartstrings for the whole duration of 2 minutes and 53 seconds.
Jersey depicts the story of an ex-cricketer and his family, who are going through financial struggles. The actor is shown as a loving father who just wants to fulfil his son’s birthday wish to have a cricket jersey, and financially unable to do so, he even retorts to stealing from his wife. The rest of the trailer sees Shahid and Mrunal’s journey from the past and present and the lengths a father can go to just to not lose the love and respect of their kid.
In each and every frame, both Shahid and Mrunal get the perfect emotions that makes me feel for them and with them. Shahid’s scenes as a cricketer reminded me of him playing the sport in Dil Bole Hadippa! over a decade ago, and he still possesses the same charm and even more refined craft. Pankaj Kapur as a coach promises brilliance as is expected from him and the whole journey of the film seems to be a heart touching one that I cannot wait to unfold on the big screen.
Jersey is a remake of the 2019 National Award-winning film by the same name, and the director of the original, Gowtam Tinnanuri, has helmed the Hindi version as well. It is produced by Allu Aravind, Aman Gill, Dil Raju and Suryadevara Naga and will hit the theatres this New Year’s Eve on December 31, 2021.
When Shahid had attained the first blockbuster of his career with Kabir Singh, everyone was expecting him to jump at the opportunity and signs multiple films but the actor took his time to choose his project meticulously and I have to say if Jersey’s trailer is something to go by, his sincerity reflects in them. I have huge expectations from the film because of Shahid, Mrunal and Pankaj and also because of the legacy of the Telugu original. I’ll have to wait for a little over a month to see how it pans out but the trailer has given me a promising start.
