Having hit hard by the second wave of Covid-19, the number of covid cases continues to rise in India. Amidst the pandemic, BCCI gave a green signal to host IPL 2021 in India. There is no doubt that over a decade, IPL has become a huge sporting event and the entire country looks forward to it.
BCCI and IPL took to their respective social media handles to confirm the news that IPL 2021 will be indefinitely suspended. The announcement came after Sunrisers Hyderabad’s team member Wriddhiman Saha tested positive for Covid-19 along with Delhi Capitals’ player Amit Mishra. Even players from Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings bowling coach L. Balaji were tested positive for the virus.
The BCCI does not want to compromise on the safety of all the players, support staff, and other participants involved in organizing the tournament. The decision was taken keeping the safety, health, and well-being of all the stakeholders in mind. The BCCI also stated, “In difficult times such as these, we tried to bring in some positivity and cheer through IPL, however, it is imperative that the tournament is now suspended and everyone goes back to their families and loved ones in these trying times.”
