Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara became an iconic film on its own for a lot of reasons. Be it the modern take on love and friendship, the Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol and Farhan Akhtar trio, Katrina Kaif and Hrithik’s chemistry, the songs and more, it set trends all over.
And not just that, even a few phrases and scenes from the film became absolutely iconic. One such is the ‘mental bwoy‘ phrase, as said by Abhay’s character in the film. Speaking on Tiger Baby Films‘ Off The Record Series, Abhay recently took us all through all that went behind this iconic phrase and scene.
Speaking about it, Abhay shares that this was originally inspired by Zoya and Farhan’s school teacher from Manekji Cooper who couldn’t say boy and mental and would say ‘Bwoy’ and ‘Mantal’. Zoya took inspiration from there, and instead of having Farhan (who knows the teacher) say it, she had Abhay say it. And Abhay went to Jamnabhai Narsee, which was a rival school. Though he never heard the teacher say it and was scared of ruining it, he went on to say it in the film and well, we all know how iconic that became!
He also shares how in that scene on the highway, Hrithik almost killed them. He says that Farhan was quick to jump out as the car turned, but he was still inside and afraid he would die!

Now, this is just more reason to go back to the scenes and fall in love with their wit, quirk and sass all over again! And when it comes to Zoya Akhtar, it’s not surprising that even her school teacher acted as inspiration.
Off The Record is a series on the Tiger Baby Films’ Instagram handle where they have actors speak about certain iconic and important scenes from the films they were a part of and share all that went behind making it. Being a huge Zoya Akhtar and Tiger Baby Films’ fan, it sure is something I always look forward to!
