Practicing good hygiene goes a long way in protecting vaginal health. Vaginal health issues can affect one’s fertility, sexual drive, and overall health. They can also increase stress levels and affect self-confidence. To understand the dos and don’ts of vaginal care, we recently invited Dr. Amodita Ahuja, Consultant Gynecologist, Obstetrician, and Laparoscopic Surgeon, to host an Ask Me Anything session on the Girl Tribe by MissMalini App. Dr. Amodita answered all the questions the Tribe had on dealing with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and urinary tract infections (UTIs), safe sexual practices, best hygiene practices, and more. Q. What is the best way to doing away with vaginal hair, without harming the skin?
The best way to clean vagina hair is to just trim it. No shaving, no waxing, nor using hair removal creams.
Q. Is it fine to douche the vagina with a jet spray?
Douching is a total no-no. It kills all the healthy bacteria in the vagina. Please clean only your vulva from the outside with warm water.
Q. Does wearing a sanitary pad for more than six hours make you feel itchy down there?
Wearing a pad for more than six hours can increase the risk of cervical cancer and endometriosis.
Q. Should we wash our vaginas with an intimate wash or is water enough?
The vagina is self-cleaning, so warm water is more than enough to clean your vagina. There’s no need to use any wash.
Q. Is white discharge normal?
Discharge is normal if it is white in color, not associated with foul smell and/ or itching. It can vary in consistency from thick to thin during different phases of the menstrual cycle. But if you have a foul smell, itching, and greyish-white or green discharge, then you need to see a gynaecologist.
Q. Often the area between the thighs turns black. is there any way to resolve this issue?
This could be because of insulin resistance which you might be developing. So please get it checked.
