Currently, iconic ‘60s inspired eye makeup seems to be having a moment. The dark creases and exaggerated eyes first made popular by icons like Twiggy and Cher in the ‘60s now seems to be everywhere. From runaways to celebs social media are rocking their versions in some capacity or another. Floating liners, graphic cat eyes or doe-eyed Bambi looks and nude lips, everyone’s got their own style of recreating these fun elements. It’s the perfect way to make you look bright-eyed and fresh and it totally got our seal of approval.
However, beauty influencers and makeup artists can make it seem easy to do but we understand the hesitation that comes when trying it for the first time. Never fear, we’ve got you covered. If you’re interested in replicating this retro style we’ve broken down our version in a few easy steps. Of course, keep in mind it’s normal to make mistakes. With a little practice, you’ll be acing this mod-style in no time.

All the tools you’ll need:
- Eye primer
- Black kajal or gel liner
- Beige or nude eye pencil
- Black eyeshadow
- Liquid eyeliner
- A light neutral shimmer eyeshadow
- Liquid eyeliner
- Mascara
- Pair of fluttery lashes.
1. Prime your eyelids
Always start by priming your lids first whether it’s a dedicated eye primer or concealer do what works best for you. Next, you want to do a wash of a subtle neutral shade of shimmer over your lids. If you want to stay true to the OG retro reference apply a matte cream or pastel shade of your choice.
2. Map out your crease
So technically you aren’t literally putting eyeliner in the natural crease. You will need to apply just above to give the illusion of bigger, brighter deep-set eyes. The key here is where you need to draw the circular line. You actually need to trace your eye sockets are and where the natural bone is. There are two ways you. can do this.
First, put a dot near the end of the crease, the centre of the eye and at the inner part. Remember all these dots are right above the crease. Then connect these using your eye pencil or even a black eyeshadow and precise brush. If you have hooded eyes, look straight downwards into a mirror and without blinking draw a line above your natural crease. This technique allows you to actually see the liner so that it doesn’t get lost in the fold. If you want to cheat the appearance of more lid space create a thicker line. This will make it even more visible when your eyes are open.
3. Draw on a small wing eyeliner
Take your black liquid liner and follow the natural lash line the way you would usually apply your eyeliner. Make sure to make the line as thin as possible and do a baby wing at the edge. Next, go over the bottom lash line with a black eyeshadow and extend the outer edge where it runs parallel to your wing.
4. Top of your look with false lashes
Before you finish your look apply a beige or nude coloured eye pencil in the water line to make the eyes appear even bigger. Then pile on your mascara and false lashes. Use a fluttery tapered pair that gives volume without being too overwhelming. If you’re not a fan of lashes you really want to pile on the mascara for a chunky look and don’t forget to apply them to your lower lashes too! Finish the rest of the makeup and top it off with a nude lip and you’ll be rocking some serious ‘60s vibes!
