The Daft Punk, one of the most listened to and loved electronic music duos in the last three decades, have decided to go their separate ways after 28 years of making music together. They announced their split through a video called “Epilogue”. Variety magazine quoted their publicist, Kathryn Frazier, who officially confirmed the split but refused to share more details.
The video of “Epilogue” features the robot duo in a scene from one of their own films ‘Electroma (2006)’. They are seen walking in a desert wearing their trademark robot helmets and leather jackets and one of them is blown up. This is followed by a cutaway that reads ‘1993-2021’. This cuts to a sunset where the duo’s song, “Touch” from their album “Random Access Memories” plays.
The duo — whose real names are Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo — shunned publicity ever since they began and were never not seen without their iconic robot helmets.
They rose to fame with their songs “Da Funk” and “Around The World” from their 1997 album “Homework”. They then went on to release “Discovery” in 2001 which featured the hit club number “One More Time”. They also composed the the soundtrack for 2010 sci-fi film ‘Tron: Legacy’. In 2014, the Duo even won the Grammy for Album Of The Year for their album “Random Access Memories” that featured the their most popular track, “Get Lucky” which featured Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers.
The duo made two songs with The Weeknd, “Starboy” and “I Feel It Coming”, which became huge hits upon its release. “Starboy” went on to earn them their first Billboard Top 100 number one position.
While they have kept a low profile since then, this news has surely left all fans broken and has left them all hoping that this isn’t the last they are hearing from this duo and that they’ll continue making music— individually if not as Daft Punk.
