Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar is enjoying some family time in North Bengal before he kickstarts the post-production work on his most ambitious project, Sardar Udham Singh. The Vicky Kaushal starrer period drama was to originally release in January 2021, however, due to the coronavirus-led pandemic brought the development to halt.
Now according to a report by Midday, the filmmaker has revealed that by the end of February, the makers will be able to announce the new release date. He was quoted as saying—“By late next month, we should be able to announce the [new] release date. We were lucky to have completed the shoot of Sardar Udham Singh by February-end last year, before the lockdown. At the moment, post-production work, including editing and music, is going on. The dubbing will begin soon.”
A number of films, including Shoojit’s last release Gulabo Sitabo (2020) starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana, opted for digital premieres in the past few months. Earlier reports were doing rounds that the biopic — based on revolutionary Sardar Udham Singh who assassinated Punjab’s former lieutenant governor Michael O’Dwyer to take revenge of the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre — may release on the OTT platform as well. However, the director believes that the audience deserves to experience the tale of the freedom fighter in all its glory, on the silver screen. “We are looking at releasing the film in theatres this year. An ideal scenario would be to release it in cinemas first, and then on OTT.”
