This lockdown has prompted all of us to look towards OTT for films, series and more and the digital space has surely been booming. We have had new shows releasing every other week and are seeing big budget films and superstars choosing to go through with a direct-to-OTT release. The latest one to go the OTT route was David Dhawan‘s Coolie No. 1.
Starring Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan in the lead, David Dhawan has directed the remake of his very own 1555 film that starred Govinda and Karisma Kapoor. Just a while ago, they announced that the 2020 film is set to premiere on Amazon Prime during the Christmas weekend. But news now suggests that along with a digital release, the stakeholders of the film — Amazon Prime, David Dhawan and producer Vashu Bhagnani — are in talks with single screen theatres to explore the possibility of a hybrid release. This means that the film will premiere digitally and will release in select theatres too.
Bollywood Hungama quotes a source as saying:
The single screen owners feel that there is no better film than a comedy like Coolie No. 1 to release in cinema halls and get the audiences back in big numbers. While the multiplex associations have put their foot down, the single screen associations are more than happy to screen the film at their property considering the fact that their audience does not have access to the OTT platforms.
The source adds that the makers are keen on this idea and that the final call will be taken by the end of the month. The fact that Varun is a popular face when it comes to massy, family entertainers is also why everyone associated feel that this comedy will be the perfect film to reopen the theatres with this Christmas.
I sure am super excited about seeing this absolute entertainer on the big screen and cannot wait for it! What about you guys?
