While wearing masks has become the new norm our lipsticks have taken a back seat. No one wants a smeary mess all over our face once that mask comes off. So while many have opted the route of lip stains and long-wearing matte formulas, I’m personally tired of them. Don’t get me wrong, I love a smooth pigmented formula but you have to admit it can suck the life out of your lips. Besides, wearing the masks for long periods daily can cause irritated skin including chapped lips as a result. So keeping our skin moisturised is more important than ever, especially so if you’re naturally prone to dryness like me. Revealing chapped lips is not a pretty picture and can get especially worse in the coming winter season.
In this case, glosses are no beuno and lip masks work great overnight but we do need something for the day. The perfect in-between is a tinted lip balm that will keep your lips hydrated throughout the day and give a little colour along the way making you feel a little more put together. Plus you don’t need a mirror to reapply it. I’ve rounded up a few great balms that will sink into your skin instead of your face mask and won’t create a gloppy mess. While I can’t promise the colour won’t leave absolutely any stain on your mask, they might not, in the very least they’ve left far more subtle marks than a gloss or creamy lipstick.

1. Burts Bees, Tinted Lip Balm
Starting us off is the OG fan favourite from Burts Bee. This tinted lip balm has been one of the brands best-selling item for years and for good reason. It has just the right hint of colour and provides around 8 hours of moisture. It’s a sheer formula that won’t glop around on your lips or transfer onto your mask. You would have to literally pile it on for that to happen but you won’t need to! One swipe is more than enough to leave your skin feeling soft and supple. Plus its made of safe botanical ingredients and is available in 6 naturally flattering shades.
2. Bobbi Brown, Tinted Balm SPF15
Another low-key favourite that doesn’t get enough credit is this Bobbi Brown balm that comes in a tiny pot. It’s super nourishing with a touch of colour that leaves a simple natural stain. While the texture might feel balmy its not sticky and won’t transfer. Just give it a minute or so to settle before wearing your mask. And the best part? It comes with SPF15! Don’t forget that you’re lips need protecting from the sun too—yes, even under that mask. However, since it comes in a pot I’d recommend carrying this with a tiny lip brush in your purse and avoid using your hands to apply when out and about.
3. Revlon, Colourburst Balm Stain
This Revlon hybrid product is pretty cool as it acts a stain but has the texture and moisture effect of a lip balm. A fantastic option from the drugstore it comes in a handful of subtle shades and doesn’t feel too heavy on the lips. This is one that definitely has the most staying power, the colour lingers on your lips throughout the day without the need to refresh again and again. Plus it comes in a handy crayon stick that twists up which makes it easy to apply even without a mirror.
4. Dior, Lip Glow
This blam from Dior is gorgeous inside and out. It comes in a variety of sheer natural shades to best suit your lips and is even now available in a matte glow formula. As per the website they claim to be hydrating and nourishing for over 24 hours. Moreover, the new matte blam formula in the shade rosewood has a velvety finish that softly blurs the lips and leaves a slight flush that screams your lips but better.
5. The Body Shop, Born Lippy Pot Lip Balm
A great underrated product from The Body Shop, this lip balm in the shade cheery keeps your chapped lips moisturised for a long time with a sheer rosy hint of colour. It has a very pleasant scent of crushed berries when applied that isn’t too overwhelming. Moreover, it’s a great job by itself soothing the lips and works great when layered with other lip products.
