24 more hours until it’s officially Diwali time! This festive time of the year could be just the remedy for the kind of 2020 we’ve all had. The excitement is at an all-new high and while celebrations may be slightly toned-down, our outfits needn’t be. After all, don’t good outfits change our mood for the better? But given our prolonged time in pyjamas, it’s possible that dressing up decently might just become a challenging task. Especially to strike the right balance between subtlety and OTT. Over-the-top obviously, since it’s one of the most loved festivals—Diwali! And subtle because at-home is where most of us will be! Now, to get you into the spirit if you aren’t already and serve you with some sartorial inspiration, we’ve rounded up some of the best home-appropriate festive looks, courtesy of your favourite Bollywood stars.
No matter what your plan is for the next 4-5 days, these looks will give you an idea or two on where to wear what! Scroll below for our celebrity-inspired festive edit!
12 celebrity looks to take festive dressing inspiration from this Diwali:
1. Dhanteras
Dhanteras is usually spent shopping for gold or silver items and most importantly, lighting up our homes. Keeping in mind the lowkey nature of this day, we looked to stars that have sported the good ol’ kurta-churidars in the past. A kurta set has just the right amount of comfort and style and is perfect for a day like this. If you’re in the mood for something sparkly, opt for a blingy kurta set like Deepika Padukone‘s in a standout hue. For maximum comfort, a cotton set like Karisma Kapoor with statement florals and bold colours will be your best choice. But if you want to channel your fashionista-self, take cues from Aditi Rao Hydari and colour-block your outfit. Go for bold hues to leave a lasting impact!
2. Laxmi Pujan
Laxmi Pujan is the main day of Diwali and so pulling out your best dresses is a necessity. Well, not really, but you know what we mean! And what better than the elegance of the six-yard drape to celebrate the occasion? If you’re looking for a highly traditional look and feel, turn to Kajol Devgan‘s fuchsia pink saree teamed with a green, brocade blouse. For a more sexy vibe, Katrina Kaif‘s slinky, high-shine saree will definitely become your favourite. But if you want to inject a whole lot of fun and colour to your look, you need to check out Kajal Aggarwal‘s canary yellow saree, that she wore for her engagement recently.
3. Govardhan Puja
Govardhan Puja or Annakut is the 4th day of Diwali and is celebrated with a feast enjoyed with friends and family. But this year, there’s a good chance that things might be slightly more lowkey. But don’t let that dampen your festive spirit or your festive outfits! Go for ensembles that are playful, traditional-looking and come in festive colours. Take for instance Alia Bhatt‘s deep red, off-shoulder maxi dress. The polka print, the colour and the border of the dress hold just the right amount of festive vibe in them. If you want to look balanced between dressy yet simple, kind of like what most of us aim for, for at-home celebrations, have a look at Sharmin Sehgal‘s white anarkali. Ditch the dupatta if you want to be fuss-free and spruce it up with some statement chaandbalis. But if you want comfort to take the front seat with Indian silhouettes, opt for a cotton maxi like Vidya Balan‘s.
4. Bhai-Dhuj
Given the playful nature of Bhai-Dhuj, opting for ensembles like shararas or ghararas will be your best bet! You’re going to spend the day with your siblings, probably indulge in crazy selfie sessions and binge-eat your favourite mithais. A sharara is just what you need for the occasion. Whether you’re going for something extravagant like Kangana Ranaut or Kriti Sanon or slightly more modest yet dressy like Bipasha Basu, make sure to spend the most fun day of Diwali in the most playful Indian staple.
