It’s the year of the ‘new normal’ and ‘everything virtual’. But I think the MVPs of pulling off a virtual event in the coolest way possible has to be the 2020 Emmys! Deadline‘s Pete Hammond also said,
The Emmys themselves are not eligible to actually win an Emmy, but the Herculean task of pulling this off the way they have would deserve one.
The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony happened this morning and what a show! Although it wasn’t like the usual hall-full-of-people ceremony, it was still a lot more successful than expected. And if you missed the ceremony, don’t you worry, we got you covered! Below, we’ve listed down the highlights of the 2020 Emmy awards and you can also check out the winner’s list here.
1. The (Half) Friends Reunion
Best actress nominee Jennifer Aniston was chatting with Jimmy Kimmel when Courtney Cox just walked into the shot next to Aniston. When Jimmy asked what Courtney was doing there, she responded by saying, “Of course I am here, we live together! Yeah, we’ve been roommates since 1994 Jimmy, hello?” as a Friends reference. And just when we all thought it couldn’t get any better, Lisa Kudrow joined the two! It was a fun reunion to watch and just what we needed in 2020. Although we did miss the boys but let’s take what we can get, right?
2. Zendaya’s Big Win
Zendaya’s 2020 Emmy win actually made history! She won the best drama actress award and became the youngest actress to ever win in that category. The 24-year-old actress plays the role of Rue, a drug addict in Euphoria. On winning the award she said,
I know this feels like a weird time to be celebrating, but I just want to say there is hope in the young people out there. I know our TV show doesn’t always feel like a great example of that, but there is hope in the young people, and I just want to say to all my peers out there doing the work in the streets, I see you, I admire you, I thank you.
3. Ramy Youssef Revealed The Other Side
In case you were wondering how did the winners get their trophies at home and what happened to those who were nominated but didn’t win, thank Ramy Youssef for revealing it all. Losing the award just became a tad bit more awkward than usual this year and here’s why. In order to make sure the winners had their trophies with them when the announcements were made, the Emmy producers were sent to the houses of all major nominees of this year in a hazmat suit. And when the winner was announced, they’d just knock at the winner’s door and present the award to them live. But that also means that those who didn’t win had to watch the award go back from their house. Ramy was nominated for the best leading comedy actor but lost it to Eugene Levy from Schitt’s Creek. And he managed to take a video of waving goodbye to the trophy into the distance.
4. Kimmel Being The Perfect Host
Being the host at a ceremony with no audience can be a bit weird. But Jimmy Kimmel pulled it off like a boss and kept everyone entertained thoroughly. The fact that the team set up cardboard cut-outs of celebrities in the empty chairs at the Staples Center to make up for the lack of audience was funny and genius. And here are a few jokes that Jimmy cracked during his opening monologue that just made the ceremony ten times better.
Hello and welcome to the pand-Emmys!
No-one is in the audience, I’m up here all alone. Just like prom night.
The network censors have decided that every time I say the words Schitt’s Creek, we’re required to put the spellin gon the screen. You know, just in case you’re wondering why network television is almost dead.
The big questions I guess we should answer, is why would you have an awards show in the middle of a pandemic? ‘Why’ is a question I’ve been asked a lot this week. But you know what else seems frivolous and unnecessary? Doing it every other year.
We have live feeds to and from more than 100 locations from around the world. You know how hard it is to get your parents to Facetime? Multiply that by a lot.
5. Jennifer Aniston Puts Out A Fire
Aniston became the firefighter at the ceremony by putting out a fire on the set. The fire wasn’t planned to spiral that far but Aniston quickly came to the rescue and used a fire extinguisher to put it out. Guess she’s learned how to put a fire out since the time she burned down Phoebe’s apartment.
