A couple of Bollywood films which were scheduled to release in the theatres were released on OTT platforms due to the ongoing pandemic. From Gulabo Sitabo, Raat Akeli Hai, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl to Sadak 2, many makers opted for a digital release. Now, Shakeela headlined by Richa Chadha is also reportedly headed for an OTT release.
The biopic based on the life of South star Shakeela is one of the most awaited films of the year. Directed by Indrajit Lankesh, the film is now complete and edited. It chronicles the controversial life of Shakeela, who was a big adult star. The film also showcases the male-dominated star system in the southern industry in the 90s.
According to the trade buzz, the makers are in talks with a leading OTT platform to explore the option of releasing the film digitally. With the ongoing pandemic resulting in a nationwide theatre shut down, waiting for a theatrical release isn’t in the best interest of the parties who are invested in the film. Earlier, the makers had decided to launch their theatrical trailer in March-end, while the release was scheduled for July.
A source reveals that—
The film already had a digital exhibitor and thus, they are the first party to approach. The chances of theatres opening soon look bleak. Keeping that in mind, the producers have initiated discussions with OTT platforms.
Though we would have loved to see the film on the big screen, we are eager to know more about the OTT release!
