There are plenty of styles that enter the trend charts as seasonal fads but end up becoming timeless classics. And one from that list is statement sleeves. Exaggerated sleeves have long been fashion’s go-to for grabbing eyeballs. From diaphanous puffy sleeves, batwing sleeves to amplified ruffles and cape styles, exaggerated sleeves come in a variety of iterations. And they’ve all been eyed on and tried on by Bollywood’s sartorial queens. Cape-style sleeves, however, have been favoured a tad more than the rest. Pleated versions giving way for power-shoulders to playful ones that feature feathery accents or a one-shoulder piece, here’s how Bollywood’s Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif to Janhvi Kapoor and more have styled them! Scroll ahead for inspiration.
How B-town babes sported cape-style sleeves:
1. Priyanka Chopra Jonas
For a Bumble event in Mumbai last year, the globetrotter arrived in a striking, tangerine orange midi dress. The body-hugging dress highlighted Priyanka’s curves beautifully and the eye-blinding colour of the outfit was quite the statement-maker. But the addition of the pleated cape sleeves added a hint of sartorial drama to the look and only elevated the actor’s boss-like vibe!
2. Kiara Advani
Pantsuits, in millennial lingo, can be described as the badasses of clothes. For a press conference in the capital city, the Good Newwz actress opted for an updated version of the pantsuit that came with cape-like sleeves. The dramatically plunging neckline gave a peek of the lacy, powder blue bralette Kiara opted for, for a rather risqué touch. The sensuous vibe of this outfit was perfectly balanced with the badass-ness of the statement cape sleeves, hence proving capes = fashionably bossy!
3. Janhvi Kapoor
Janhvi’s love for show-stopping white gowns at red carpet events is well and clear. Sometimes she makes a statement with the volume of the dress, and sometimes with dazzling elements like feathers. That being said, for an awards ceremony last year, the actress donned a form-fitting, corset-like ensemble covered in delicate plumes. The off-shoulder gown came with a netted cape forming a trail on the floor, drenched in feathers. Talk about mixing multiple OTT elements and how!
4. Deepika Padukone
Deepika has a prominent penchant for cape sleeves and it’s quite unmissable. And her go-to designer for impactful cape silhouettes is Alex Perry. Take a look at the royal purple gown she was spotted in attending an awards ceremony in Davos. The body-hugging dress came in a mermaid-like silhouette accentuating the actor’s curves. The ruched effect at the centre added a sensuous vibe to the look, while the boxy shoulders transforming into beautiful cape sleeves put her right on a sartorial pedestal.
5. Katrina Kaif
In a romantic pink hue with a fuss-free silhouette, Katrina’s Alex Perry number was day-time appropriate as well as night-time. For a press conference of her beauty line Kay Beauty, Katrina wore a one-shoulder, midi sheath dress. The sleeve came with a tight-pleated cape instantly amplifying the impact of her demure dress.
6. Sonam Kapoor Ahuja
Bringing her A-game to the red carpet, Sonam for Zee Cine Awards in 2019 wore a dramatic gown by a Dubai-based label Maison Yeya. Skipping on her usual choice of loud colours, the actress went for a satin dress painted in lilac. The ensemble tastefully mixed a variety of OTT elements—a plunging neckline, a thigh-high slit and exaggerates capes.
