With Covid-19 taking over the world and multiple nations still under lockdown including India, the entertainment industry had come to a standstill for a while. With no theatres being open, filmmakers and distributors were at two spectrums trying to decide as to whether they should indefinitely wait for a theatrical release or go for a direct digital release like many films have. Recently, seven major films were announced for a direct digital release on Disney+Hotstar that included Laxmmi Bomb, Ludo, Dil Bechara, Lootcase, Sadak 2, Khuda Hafiz and Bhuj. The distributors and theatre owners were not happy about this as you can imagine and spoke about how they are in deep trouble due to the crisis caused by the lockdown. But soon after many filmmakers decided to wait it out to release their movies on the big screen. The first two movies to announce their theatrical release were Sooryavanshi and ’83. Now, turns out a third has been added to this list.
According to a report in Bollywood Hungama, Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan starter Coolie No.1 will be releasing in theatres. The makers have decided to release the movie next year on 1st January 2021. While Sooryavanshi and ’83 are looking for releases towards the end of this year, there is a strong chance that both of them might get delayed further if the number of Covid-19 cases go up. While the makers received many offers from many OTT platforms, a source revealed that David Dhawan is a big believer in big-screen entertainment and he put his foot down for it.
Coolie No.1 is the official remake of the 1995 Govinda and Karisma Kapoor movie of the same name. So, we can expect an upgraded and modern version of the same story if the new Judwaa is anything to go by.
