The passing of the veteran choreographer, Saroj Khan, has been a huge loss to the Indian film industry. From starting off single-handedly in the 70s to becoming the ‘mother of choreography in India’, she is surely an inspiration to so many.
Speaking about how a lot of filmmakers wanted to document her life and legacy, her daughter, Sukaina Khan revealed to Mid-Day that choreographer-filmmaker Remo D’Souza was very keen on telling her story.
She said:
A few people were in talks with my mother to make her biopic. But, she used to dismis the idea, saying, ‘Mere baare mein kya jaanna hai logon ko?’ However, during her last days, she had said Remo D’Souza was keen on telling her story. She thought Remo, being a dancer himself, would understand her journey, and hence, was the perfect person to helm the project.
Sukaina also added that whoever is going to make her mother’s film, she wants them to go beyond Saroj ji’s choreography and ‘know her journey as a fighter.’
Speaking about the film, Remo says that he had approached her while they were working together in the song, Tabah Ho Gaye in Kalank.
He added:
In response, she had said, ‘You should make it.’ I promised her that I would visit her to gather information about her childhood and early days. But, I didn’t pursue it then as I was busy with my film.
Now, he says he is keen to make this film on her as a tribute. He says he will take the discussion up with Sukaina and that he is the one who should be making the film because Saroj Ji trusted him with it.
