Rasika Dugal is surely one of the most underrated actors in India! Her outstanding performances in recent web series like Delhi Crime, Made In Heaven, Mirzapur and movies like Manto, Bombay Talkies and more shows how effortlessly she plays her characters. And so, we were wondering what this fine actor likes to binge-watch on, what her taste is. Rasika shared her 5 favourite series/movies that she’s recently watched and the list is top-notch! Scroll down to check it out.
1. The Favourite
Where: Disney+ Hotstar
I am a little to watch this film but relieved that I didn’t miss it altogether. Such a beautiful exchange between three extremely talented female actors—Olivia Coleman, Rachel Weisz and EmmaStone. Olivia Colemans’ eyes as she watches Rachel Weiz dance is a masterclass in acting. The scenes of the film are so beautifully staged and designed that all of it feels like one long beautiful dance.
2. I Lost My Body
Where: Netflix
I lost my body—A drama/fantasy animation film is undoubtedly my most favourite watch in the last few months. Starting with a macabre scene of a human hand escaping from the refrigerator of a medical lab, the film takes us on the most poignant journey of love and loneliness in city life. Beautifully scripted, breathtakingly, and skillfully visualized—it made my heart melt while simultaneously gasp at the skill of filmmaking. The background score was to die for! This is one of those films I will revisit many times.
3. Succession
Where: Disney+ Hotstar
This series was my lockdown hook. The kind of watch that makes you speed through work just so that you can have that one hour of pure unadulterated joy. Succession is gripping in every way. Intelligent writing aided by some very clever lines (My favourite: ‘My travel agent specializes in guilt trips’). The most interesting characters and some stunning performances to pull them off—this one is an actor’s delight. The best ensemble cast I have seen in a while with Jeremy Strong and Mathew Macfayden topping the list for me. It has been more than a month since I finished watching season two and I think I still have withdrawals!
4. Paatal Lok
Where: Amazon Prime
Like everyone else, this one made it to my list too! I got on to it slightly later than the rest of the world. So worry was it wouldn’t live up to the hype. But, it did that and more! The magical combination of Sudip Sharma‘s writing, Avinash Arun‘s lens, and some stunning performances by Jaideep Ahlawat and Abhishek Banerjee made the series a notch above the other series I have watched recently. The script had the quality of an epic which, I felt, someone was narrating to me, so I could understand the idiosyncrasies of the world we live in. The most rewarding part of the story was it’s callbacks!
5. Unbelievable
Where: Netflix
It’s a difficult but important watch. At the end of the first two episodes, I didn’t know if I had the ability to stomach the injustice meted out to an eighteen-year-old rape survivor (essayed beautifully by Kaitlyn Dever). The following episodes move into police procedural (a genre that I am currently very interested in) as two female cops help each other investigate a rape case. Three powerful female performances by Merritt Wever (she is also in a small part in ‘Marriage story‘- random trivia!) Toni Collette and Kaitlyn Dever. Each with a distinct style!
Which one of these recommendations by Rasika Dugal are you going to watch first? Let us know in the comments below. I think I might watch The Favourite tonight!
