The passing of the veteran comedian, Jagdeep, has been a huge loss to Hindi cinema. The whole film industry mourned his death and thanked the 81-year-old actor for entertaining through the years with his legendary comic timing in more than 400 films. The actor passed away on Thursday owing to age-related health issues.
Today, his son, Jaaved Jaaferi, took to his social media to pen a heartfelt note for his father, calling him a legend in the true sense. He thanks everyone who paid their condolences, saying this is his father’s real reward after 70 years in the industry. Throwing light on his father’s life, he reminisces how at the age of 8, he was left to earn his living by working in a tin factory, selling kites to working under a ‘maalishwaala’. At the age of 10, he says, he got his break, and found his calling in cinema. Jaaved remembers how his father began his journey in films with B.R Chopra‘s first film, Afsana, in 1949 and that revered personalities like Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt, Mehboob Khan and K Asif have been his mentors.
He wrote that “From the most natural child actor I have witnessed in Hindi cinema to a sensitive leading man, to the craziest improv comedian with impeccable timing in latter years, he never failed to entertain and amaze.” So true, we can’t help but agree to that!
He adds:
Hindustaan ke logon ko do cheezon se bohot lagaao hai, ek hai Ma, doosra, Cinema. Mere father ko bhi in donon se behad lagaao tha. I would like to end with his favourite couplet which his Maa quoted under dire straits and which he constantly used as a reminder – “Woh manzil kya, jo aasaani se teh ho; Woh raahi kya, jo thak kar baith jaaye”. To the man I called ‘papa’ and who the world knew by his various avatars, SALAAM !!! Aapka naam Sooorma Bhopali ayysaee naee tha !!
He posted a link to his entire note on his Twitter:
A day after the veteran actor’s passing, his grandson, Meezaan Jaafery also penned a note for him. In it, he urged all youngsters to spend as much time with their grandparents and value them.
