Théâtre de la Mode was a 1945-1946 touring exhibition which initially began in Europe and proceeded towards the United States. The aftermath of World War II left the French fashion industry crippled and the touring exhibit’s purpose was to raise funds for the survivors of the war as well as the French fashion industry. The highlight of the exhibition was that it showcased 237 doll-sized figurines that were presented by the now big names like Nina Ricci, Cristobal Balenciaga, Pierre Balmain and more. There was a major shortage of fabrics post the war and so designers had to use what they had, smartly, which gave rise to the idea of minuscule figures. In 2020, humanity is faced with yet another crisis, in a slightly different permutation, one that does not allow people to come close, physically. These strange difficulties were the seeds of inspiration of Dior‘s autumn/winter 2020-2021 Haute couture collection.
Everything you need to know about Dior‘s latest collection:
Maria Grazia Chiuri looked to Théâtre de la Mode as she brainstormed Dior‘s latest collection. Consisting of 37 designs, the lineup of the garments is presented on miniature mannequins. The collection comprises meticulously-crafted Haute gowns. Intricately pleated gowns that explore braiding and beading, sharply structured bar suits, buoyant ball gowns with tiers of greige silk gauze, a plumage overdose, to multiple layers of tulle, the designs are an extraordinary representation of femininity.
The show-stopping dress featured an intricate work of shimmering, beaded bodice, but the finely pleated skirt was a testament of Dior‘s excellent craftsmanship—multihued panels of fabric, think soft, earthy colours were stitched together to form one garment.
The palatial colour palette included hints of gold and silver, muted lilacs, pristine whites and a jet black, flamboyant gown breaking the monotony of the mostly neutral colour scheme.
The brand unveiled its collection via a mesmerizing movie directed by Matteo Garrone. The storyline highlight’s the collection’s oneness with nature with a few men carrying a trunk with these gowns. You can watch the movie below.
