Matthew Williams got his big break in fashion when he served as the art director for Kanye West and creative director for Lady Gaga. The street style expert also has a brand to his name, 1017 Alyx 9SM, whose roots lie in haute street-wear. The designer has also worked alongside plenty of other big names in the industry like Virgil Abloh, Heron Preston, Justin Saunders, and YWP when they founded #BEEN #TRILL—a street-wear collective. Now, the designer is transitioning into couture, bringing to it a futuristic vision as the newest creative director of French fashion maison, Givenchy.

Williams will be in charge of womenswear as well as men’s and will showcase his very first collection in Paris in October. The mastermind upon being named the creative director of Givenchy took to the brand’s official Instagram handle to express his gratitude via a short voice recording. He said:
I want to take this opportunity to say how honoured I am to be taking on the role of creative director of Givenchy. It has been my life-long dream to be in this position and it’s really surreal that it is finally here.
Hailing from a background that catered to the likes of personalities like Kanye West, it will be exciting to see the haute couture luxury fashion house in a new light. The designer’s aim for the brand’s future along with the future of fashion is decided.
We’re living in unprecedented times and I just hope in some way I can bring hope with my community and colleagues to create positive change for our industry and for our world, and I’d like to use this platform to do so.
The naming of Matthew Williams as Givenchy‘s creative mastermind came two months after Clare Waight Keller stepped down from her role. The former creative director’s aesthetic leaned towards elegance while Williams is known for his futuristic and edgy vision. In the issued press release, Williams said that modernity and inclusivity will be two important elements he will bring to Givenchy.
