Dressing as per your body type is probably the best way to flatter it. But have you realised that the same applies to a wardrobe staple—Jeans, as well? Since we’ve been in lockdown, we never knew we’d miss wearing jeans. They are a much-loved item in every woman’s closet.
The fact remains that even though something is on-trend, doesn’t always mean it suits your body type. The key is to know what features to look for in order to flatter your figure. The search can be frustrating if you don’t know what you’re looking for. Some myths about jeans still remain; like the more you spend on a pair, the better quality it is or the longer it will last, but in the current day and age, this is no longer an issue. You can now get yourself great quality at the best price points, even with high-street brands.
If you have been struggling to find the right fit of jeans—we are here with all the answers:
1. Pear Shape
Pear-shaped ladies have slender upper bodies and wider hips. One of the major problems they are likely to face is that your jeans may fit your hips but not your waist. The narrow shoulder and waist with the broader hips are bound to give this body type some waist gaping problems too. The trick here is to wear loose but not baggy jeans and bulk up your bust to create more balance and proportion to your shape.
- Try the combination of non-stretch denim and a tapered leg for a relaxed mom fit or distressed boyfriend jeans will help skim a pear shape figure proportionately.
- Lighter denim washes draw attention to your larger lower body so avoid that and opt for darker wash denim like black, darker blues and deeper shades of green and red.
- High-waisted pants accentuate your curves in the right places.
- Straight jeans in a trouser style are great for pear body types because they skim over the hips and help provide a balanced silhouette to the rest of the body.
Check out how Sobhita Dhulipala has styled her look with darker, baggy mom fit jeans. She perfectly balances out her proportions while opting for a more relaxed vibe that’s casual yet on-trend.
2. Hourglass Shape
If your shoulders are equally proportionate to your hips you fall in the hourglass category. This is considered to be the quintessential female silhouette. For people with this shape, stretch fabric is everything! Usually, women with this body type have well-defined waists, so pick pieces with a contoured waistband. This will mimic the natural shape of the waist, ensuring it fits right at the waist without forming a gap, as this can be a common denim dilemma for this body type. Aim to find jeans that skim the body instead of moulding it.
- The bootcut jean is an hourglass lady’s best friend. They are a great way to accentuate an hourglasses figure’s curves. While the jeans will hug your thighs right, the wider bottom balances out larger hips for an overall flattering effect.
- For an ultimate slimming effect, try out a slim flare. Wear them simply with a V-neck top for a simple, classic look.
- Pick a pair of black or any dark colour denims because it’s as easily dressed-up as it is dressed-down.
- Go for an extra stretch and high waisted jeans to hug your curves and gives a more streamlined effect.
All set for summer Mouni Roy looks fab in her high-waisted, boot cut jeans. Her crop-top shows just the right amount of skin and teamed together really define her tiny waist.
3. Apple Shape
You’re an apple body type if your upper part of the body is in proportion with the lower half, but your waist is relatively short. The apple physique will typically have trouble around their midsection and have an undefined waist. So here the trick is to focus the attention everywhere else but your waist. A great way to do that is to bring attention to your shapely legs.
- Since women with this body type are likely to have no defined waist, combine your slim-fit straight jeans with a peplum top to draw the attention to the slimmest part of her body. It will create an illusion of curves. A pretty clever trick don’t you think?
- Wear tapered, ankle jeans that will accentuate your thin legs.
- Opt for high-rise jeans if you are curvy and low-rise if you are slimmer.
- Highlight your slim hips and thighs. Added tip here would be to wear long T-shirts or shirts and avoid tucking them in your jeans.
Take a cue from Huma Qureshi on how her denim fit her best. She rocks her on the go outfit while pulling focus towards her slim legs with white slim-fit jeans while staying comfy with her cool baggy denim jacket.
4. Inverted Triangle shape
The broader shoulder and narrow hips of an inverted triangle figure can be balanced by wide-legged jeans. This is because all leg lines that are wider in their hemline will help give you a long and lean look. The key tip here is finding the perfect accompaniment to your jeans. Particularly ones that downplay your broad shoulders while still giving you sexy and shapely curves. You can look effortlessly sexy if your bottoms are rightly paired.
- Cropped, wide-leg jeans or palazzos paired with basic, uncomplicated tops are the most flattering for an inverted triangle body type.
- Don’t wear too many accessories like scarves or necklaces that add extra weight to the top half, this will draw the eye to your fabulous legs and hips.
- Your slim lower body can benefit from side pockets, which help create a fuller thigh.
- Straight cut denim can also be an option as it doesn’t emphasise on any part of the body extensively and is crafted for comfort. When in doubt, opt for these types of denim without a second thought.
- Go for lighter washes or fades along the legs and knees that add shape to the thighs. I promise you won’t regret investing in a pair of white jeans.
One of our many favs Jhanvi Kapoor looks super cute for a day out with minimal dainty accessories and a sweet pink off-shoulder top. While paired with her dark jeans the lighter fade wash gives the illusion of more shape to her thighs making her look curvy.
5. Rectangle Shape
Women with a rectangle body type, have no real waist definition and the bust, waist and hips are nearly the same sizes. Your body has very few curves and square shoulders in this case but the good news is it’s one of the easiest body shapes to dress! Mid or low-rise jeans work well with this shape, as well as any top that crops above the waist. The main idea here is to create a more rounded, womanly shape to your hips.
- Skinny jeans with cool embellishments around the ankles, such as embroidery, zips or cuffs can add interest to an otherwise boring denim bottom. Also consider printed denim or coloured denim, which is a fun way to incorporate colour and pattern into your wardrobe.
- Baggy and ripped styles with cropped ankle length are the perfect way to display some summer-appropriate sandals or wedges.
- Slightly flared jeans can also help break up the angular look of your body. Pair them with literally anything.
- This is one of the easiest body types to dress where you can choose to emphasise your lack of curves or create them.
Check out Deepika Padukone who’s really embracing the baggy trend and looks great! Her more relaxed loose T-shirt tucked into her high-waisted pants really give her waist some definition and create a shape to her body.
