Tried & Tested: DIY Masks For Softer & Frizz-Free Hair This Summer

Natasha Patel

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably reached your limit and now need to resort to an at-home hair spa day instead of a real one at the salon. Yeah, we feel ya’ but during this lockdown, it’s hard to get your hands on your regular packaged hair masks and other treatments to tame the frizz and the texture. And since neither COVID nor the humidity is going anywhere, it’s safe to say that certain kitchen ingredients will be your new BFF!

While I’m not the biggest fan of DIYs for your face but when it comes to hair, it’s not only (way) thicker than your skin’s layer, but it can also do more good than damage. Here are 3 hair mask combos you need for your hair to look and feel great!

1. To Repair: Coconut Oil + Honey

Recipe: 1 tablespoon of each.
Application: Massage the mixture for 15-20 mins and then wash it off in the shower with shampoo. Follow it up with conditioner.

Why Coconut Oil:
The benefits of coconut oil are endless. Since it’s loaded with fatty acids, this oil can penetrate deeper into the hair shaft and helps keeps your hair hydrated, conditioned. Because of its moisture-retaining capabilities, it also prevents hair breakage.

Why Honey:
Honey is a natural humectant—which means, it retains and preserves moisture. It helps bring to life dull hair by adding sheen and softness.

2. To De-Frizz: Banana + Yogurt + Honey

Recipe: 1 banana (mashed) + 1 tablespoon of honey + 2 tablespoons yogurt.
Application: Massage the mixture and apply from mid-lengths to the ends. Leave it in for 20 mins and then wash it off in the shower with shampoo. Follow it up with conditioner.

Why Banana:
Bananas are rich in potassium, carbohydrates, and vitamins, which we all know is great for the body. But did you also know that our hair can reap the same nutritional benefits? Bananas help lock in moisture and eliminate frizz. Think of them as nature’s conditioners.

Why Yogurt:
Yogurt includes high levels of lactic acid, which is a great soothing agent. It also helps treat frizzy and damaged hair.

Why Honey:
As mentioned earlier, honey helps give your hair the extra boost of moisture and hydration it needs.

3. To Nourish: Aloe Vera + Castor Oil

Recipe: 1 aloe leaf (extracted) + 2 tablespoons of castor oil
Application: Massage the mixture and apply from mid-lengths to the ends. Leave it in for 15-20 mins and then wash it off in the shower with shampoo. Follow it up with a mask or conditioner.

Why Aloe Vera:
Aloe vera contains certain enzymes that help repair the dead skin cells on your scalp. Because it’s so soothing for your the scalp it helps prevent any itchiness and hair fall and also is great for conditioning your hair.

Why Castor Oil:
Castor oil has anti-inflammatory properties and is great at improving blood circulation. So along with strengthening the hair and promoting hair growth, it also nourishes your dry hair and scalp.
