Moon lovers, it’s your day! The last supermoon of 2020 will appear today, which is also called the Flower Moon. It is expected to be almost 6% bigger than the normal moon we see. The Flower Moon will comparatively be less striking than the previous supermoons that had occurred in March and April. The name Flower Moon actually comes from the increased blooming of plants and even fertility during the early days of May. It is also named as Milk Moon, Mother’s Moon and Corn Planting Moon.
What’s A Supermoon?
Dr. Greg Brown, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory explained it saying,
The moon’s orbit around the Earth is not entirely circular, instead of a slightly flattened circle or eclipse. As such, it is sometimes closer to and sometimes further away from the Earth. While definitions may vary, a supermoon typically occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon being within the closest 10 percent of its orbit.
After tonight’s supermoon, we will have to wait until April 2021 to see the next one.
