Kate Spade once said, “
Playing dress-up begins at the age of 5 and never truly ends” and I fully agree with her. A
s someone who loves fashion immensely, I can’t help but watch a movie or TV show and not notice what the characters are wearing. From early on, I drew my inspiration from everywhere, be it my mother and her friends or my favourite characters from stylish shows. There is always this one show and one character whose style you genuinely relate to. It is a known fact that actors have always been trendsetters—whether it is what they wore in a movie or their off-duty looks, what they wear is aped by masses.
So, as you unwind from a never-ending workday from home, you might as well indulge in a TV show that will not only entertain you but also inspire you to spruce up your wardrobe, so you can get out of quarantine looking chic and fabulous. Here are my top 5 stylish show recommendations that are not only a great watch but also serves as significant fashion inspo.
#1. Gossip Girl
I had to begin with this cult favourite. If you haven’t watched this show yet, it ought to be on top of your list for fashion inspiration. For those of you who have watched it, you know a re-run wouldn’t disappoint you one bit.
From jaw-dropping plot twists to striking outfits, the show has it all. The headband is now a signature “Blair Waldorf” (Leighton Meester) look. The show features custom made outfits from exquisite designers such as Zuhair Murad, Maxime Simoens, Jenny Packham, Pucci, Tibi, Oscar de la Renta, Georges Chakra, Ralph Lauren and more. Serena van der Woodsen’s (Blake Lively) polished and refined style proves that classics never go out of style.
Not just the girls, there is plenty of fashion inspiration for the guys as well. For the guy who likes to experiment, Chuck Bass’ (Ed Westwick) checkered suits, printed ties and sweaters are something you should look forward to. For those who want to go for more of a “boy-next-door look”, Nate Archibald’s (Chace Crawford) style is sharp and easy to put together. If your style is more laid-back, then let Dan Humphry’s (Penn Badgley) messy, writer-chic looks have their charm.
You can binge-watch all seasons of Gossip Girl on Netflix.
#2. Sex & The City
An iconic, set in New York perfect for you to watch with your girlfriends over video chat. The lead characters of this stylish show, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte York (Kristin Davis), and Miranda Hobbes’ (Cynthia Nixon) problems in love, life, and work are relatable and their outfits, aspirational.
Whatever your style aesthetic may be, there is something for everyone. Carrie‘s love for shoes and fashion is for the fashionistas of the group. Carrie Bradshaw always dressed for her mood—you could tell what she is feeling, basis what she is wearing. Those who love androgyny, Miranda Hobbes’ crisp pantsuits are great workwear inspiration. For date nights or girls night outs, Samantha Jones can teach you a thing or two on how to make heads turn, with a fabulous look. If your style is more feminine, then Charlotte York can give you plenty of new #OOTD ideas to try.
With the resurgence ’90s trends, such as the slip dress, kitten heels, baguettes, cowl neck crop tops, wide-legged pants and, tie and dye, the show’s style is completely relatable even today. If you don’t have the patience to go through the re-run of the show, you could also just watch the two movies that followed after the show ended.
You can watch all seasons and the movies of Sex And The City on Hotstar.
#3. Pretty Little Liars
Moving away from mushy romantic plots, and stories of friendships here is a teenage show about, a mysterious death and a dangerous stalker. Things get real dark, real quick, but that is also what keeps you hooked. Another thing that will keep you hooked to the show? The fabulous outfits.
The show’s lead protagonist feature five high school girls, with distinctly different styles, body types and personalities, leaving us with plenty of fashion inspiration. Hannah Marin (Ashley Benson), being the fashionista of the group. Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario), the preppy smart girl, with her sharp and chic, shirts paired with cute skirts and sleeveless blazers. For those who like comfort and ease, Emily Fields‘s (Shay Mitchell) style will be relatable. If your style is a little punk and edgy then Aria Montgomery‘s (Lucy Hale) biker jackets, leather pants and skater skirts will leave you with a lot of ideas for new looks. Alison DiLaurentis’ (Sasha Pieterse) girl next door style is relatable and easy to recreate.
What is also great about the style on the show is that, as the seasons and stories progress, so does the style of lead characters. The iconic thriller tv series has also got a spin-off sequel, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, which also features fantastic outfits to look forward to.
#4. Dynasty
A show about one of America’s most affluent family and the twisted dynamics between its members. If you love soap operas, then this show is for you. With great cliff hangers and dramatic dialogues, this stylish show will satisfy all your guilty pleasures and quench hunt for fashionable looks.
The lead character, Fallon Carrington (Elizabeth Gillies), the heiress to the business, aka Dynasty, has a refined and chic sense of style. Fallon dresses for the mood and moment, and boy, her winged liner is always on fleek. Some of the designers she wears on the show include, Gucci, Burberry, Maison Margiela, Giambattista Valli and more. Also, don’t miss Sammy Joe’s (Rafael de la Fuente) fabulous Dolce and Gabbana suits and Krystle Carrington‘s (Nathalie Kelley and Ana Brenda Contreras) exquisite jewellery.
You can watch the first two seasons of Dynasty on Netflix.
#5. Keeping Up With The Kardashians
This is a controversial one when it comes to “entertainment value”. But I have to admit; this show is genuinely my reality-tv guilty pleasure. There is nothing like indulging in some gossip about what is happening in the life of the Kardashian family.
Also, there are no two ways about the fact that the Kardashian sisters are one of the biggest fashion influencers and trendsetters of the world. Hence, making Keeping Up With The Kardashians one of the most stylish reality shows to binge-watch.
There are major fast-fashion brands that make replicas of every look the sisters wear. What they are wearing is truly making movements in global fashion trends. Whether you are a fashion and beauty enthusiast, there is plenty to learn from this show.
