I grappled with what I wanted to write about for Women’s Day for quite a while. If you know me then you already know that I do everything with passion or I don’t do it at all. I think it’s a great trait to have but then I struggle with mundane things that others may ace in seconds. I knew I wanted to do something with Team MissMalini, but what? All this being said, I hosted an AMA on Malini’s Girl Tribe bi-weekly and I’ve had some amazing questions thrown my way, that made me quite pensive. So I decided why not address the subject of work-wear? Most women work in corporate offices and had asked questions pertaining to how they could take steps in their style evolution for their body type. One of the greatest things that plague working women that run their homes is striking a work-life balance. You cook, you clean, you care for your children and your husband, and somehow you forget to take care of yourself in the midst of all this love-giving.
I’m aware this must be hard and my heart goes out to all the women pushing against many obstacles. And in an effort to raise morale and push positive vibes out. I decided to do a shoot with these amazing women from Team MissMalini with varying body types. They are bearing their insecurities so that you may be able to take away some style tips from this piece. Scroll through to find what is relevant to you.
For the athletic body type: like Alisha Fernandes
Style Query: What kind of styles work for a straight body type?
Style Tip: Pair paper bag trousers to create the illusion of a thinner waist. You could also pair this look with a shirt or a blouse of your choice. We used a waistcoat because it further cinches your waist. Alisha’s been styled in wedges to make her look taller.
For heavy-busted girl: like Swagata Dam
Style Query: What can I do to take attention away from my heavy bust?
Style Tip: The best way to take away attention from the bust is to draw attention to another part of your body. You can also create a break by styling your look with a blazer or a waterfall jacket of your choice. I love a nice pair of brogues and feel it’s a must-have wardrobe item.
For a wide-hip girl: like Akanksha Joshi
Style Query: What kind of clothes work best for women with wide hips?
Style Tip: Do a jumpsuit that isn’t fitted all the way down to the hips but is still fitted at the waist. If the pants are palazzo style or straight cut then it streamlines the bigger part of the body to look smaller. If you’re feeling experimental then do a subtle print or go bold in a solid colour.
For a short-sized girl: like Natasha Patel
Style Query: How to style trousers when one doesn’t want to wear heels?
Style Tip: Do high-waist cigarette trousers with a shirt. You could do bright trousers like Natasha and also colour block with another solid colour shirt if not a white one. You could also do a printed shirt if you like bolder options.
For the petite body type: like Sheena Makharia
Style Query: How to style a voluminous dress for one’s petite frame?
Style Tip: A simple button-down, midi-dress is the best way to dip your toe in the fashion pool of dresses. If you’re conscious about drowning in a dress like this, simply add a tiny belt to break the outfit. It’s also a great way to hide heavy hips and thick legs.
For the curvaceous body type: like Erin Donald
Style Query: How do I accentuate my curves with workwear?
Style Tip: Another must-have wardrobe basic is a classic black pencil skirt. Pair your pencil skirt with a striped shirt or an off-shoulder stripe blouse like Erin does! Fuzzy sandals look cute no? But if you need a more formal pair of shoes then look no further than court shoes.
