If you’re someone who knows me, you’ll know how obsessed I am with skincare. Instead, of swiping right on cute boys on a Friday night, I browse Sephora’s website and check out the latest skincare products. In fact, if I had to choose between watching Netflix or Youtube for the rest of my life, I would happily sacrifice the former because I can’t do without keeping up with my favourite beauty YouTubers. So when my two of my favourite YouTubers have collaborated and blessed us with vital information, I lost my cool! Susan Yara and Hyram are my go-to trusted sources to get skincare information from. That’s why I freaked out when I saw their video on skincare mistakes no one should make in their 20s on my homepage. If you’ve missed the video, here are some of the skincare mistakes you should avoid at all costs:
1. Products That Burn
Have you ever thought—“Oh this skincare product is tingling my skin, that must mean it’s working”. Well, I hate to burst your bubble, but products that burn your skin are not the best option out there. It either means that the product is of bad quality or it doesn’t suit your skin. So if a product tingles, take it as a warning sign.
2. DIY Skincare
It may be fun to mix up a few ingredients from your kitchen and make a fun facemask, but that can actually damage your skin. Common DIY ingredients like lemon juice, cinnamon and baking soda can really harm your skin. This DIY skincare habit does more harm than good. So stick to products that are made in labs and are dermatologically tested.
3. Too Many Treatments At Once
Sometimes you can get excited and try too many products at once, but this can damage your skin. Some ingredients should never be mixed like retinol and AHAs. This can over-exfoliate your skin and cause damage. So make it a habit to stick to a simple skincare routine.
4. Neglecting Anti-Ageing Products
No rule states that people in their 20s cannot use anti-ageing products. In fact, the earlier you start, the better. So evaluate your skin’s concerns and look for anti-ageing products that will suit your skin.
5. Tanning
If you possess even a little bit of knowledge about skincare, then you’ll know that the sun is the devil. UVA and UVB rays can not only damage your skin, but it can also cause skin cancer. So spare your skin the horror and use a liquid tanning lotion instead.
6. Remove Your Makeup
No matter how tired, sleepy or drunk you are, you should remove your makeup at night. If you fail to do so, you can clog your pores which can lead to breakouts. So invest in some cleansing oils or micellar water and keep your skin healthy. This is one skincare habit you should never neglect.
7. Not Using Toners Correctly
Susan mentions that many people tend to use toners to remove their makeup, and they end up wasting their money and damaging their skin when they do this. Toners are meant to balance the pH level of your skin and if they have active ingredients, exfoliate. You should not use toners to remove your makeup because they won’t do the job effectively.
8. Do Your Own Research
To conclude, Hyram and Susan suggested that you shouldn’t blindly follow what other people do. What works for someone else may not work for you. So talk to dermatologists and estheticians and do your own research to build skincare habits suited perfectly for your skin.
