I bet you’re familiar with the hazards that can take place if you use dirty makeup brushes. If you’re not aware, let me paint you a picture—Using a dirty makeup brush can not only make your makeup look bad, but it can also cause rashes, breakouts and wrinkles. In fact, using a dirty makeup brush can also give you staph infection, and no one wants that. So without any further ado, here’s the proper way of cleaning and looking after your makeup brushes:
Step #1—Get The Right Tools
It’s easy to just run your brushes under a running tap for a few seconds and call it a day. However, this won’t deeply cleanse your makeup brushes. So you need the right tools for getting your brushes squeaky clean.
Makeup Brush Cleanser
Using a bar of soap or an ordinary face wash will clean your brush, but it will damage the strands of your brush. That’s why you should use a product specially formulated for your makeup brushes. I like to use the brush cleanser from M.A.C. because it’s super gentle on the strands of my brushes and it does a fantastic job at cleaning my makeup brushes.
Brush Cleaning Mat
If you want to get into all the nooks and crannies of your brushes, I suggest you use a cleaning mat. You can get one online and trust me; it’s life-changing! You’ll cut on the time you spend washing your brushes, and they’ll be as clean as a whistle!
Step #2—Airdry Your Brushes
It may be tempting to use a hairdryer to get your brushes dry, but the heat can damage the strands of your brushes. So lay a clean towel on a flat surface and place your freshly washed brushes on it to dry them.
Step #3—Wash Them At Regularly
It can be confusing as to how often you should clean your makeup brushes. As a rule of thumb, here’s what you should remember:
- Foundation & Concealer Brushes: Wash them every week.
- Brushes Used Around The Eyes: Wash them after every 2-3 uses.
- Makeup Sponges: Wash them once a week.
