If I got a penny for every time my nail broke, I’d be on my private jet on my way to vacation in the Maldives. Nails are like little canvases that you can use to express your personality. However, if you have minuscule nail beds as I do, you’ll understand the struggle growing out your nails. Just as I think my nails are long enough to paint, one of my nails breaks and I have to start
all over again
. Having brittle nails is super frustrating, but here are some tricks that I learnt over the years that make my nails stronger:
1. Make Cuticle Oil, Your BFF
When you condition your cuticles and your nail beds, your nails will grow stronger. Look out for a cuticle oil with nourishing ingredients like vitamin E; this will help soften up your cuticles and keep your nail beds healthy.
2. Cancel Your Manicure Appointments
I know that it can be tempting to treat yourself to a manicure every once in a while, but if you keep getting them often, it can damage your nail beds (especially if you are getting gel nail polish). So go easy on those visits to the nail salon and use a nail hardener instead.
3. Stay Away From Acetone
Acetone tends to dehydrate your nail plate, and continuous use of acetone can make your nails even more brittle. So use nail polish removers without acetone.
4. Ditch Hand-Sanitizers With Alcohol
It’s a known fact that alcohol has a dehydrating effect. So when you continuously use hand-sanitizers with alcohol, it not only dehydrates your skin, but it also dehydrates your nail beds. So skip the hand-sanitizer and wash your hands instead.
5. Wear Gloves While Doing Chores
Exposing your nails to a damp environment will make it prone to breakage. So when you are doing chores around the house, wear gloves so that your nails are less likely to break.
