Is it just me or do you also feel more creative and motivated when the new year is just around the corner? This coming new year is even more special because it’s not just the start of another year, it’s also the start of another decade. So, it’s important that we start off 2020 on a good note. Besides chalking up time for regular workouts and consistent meditating, I also want to take very good care of my skin starting this year. Hence, here are a few skincare-related new year’s resolutions I’m going to be following and highly suggest you do as well:
1. Use SPF Everyday
Your skin and dermatologist will both thank you for following this new year’s resolution. Rain or shine, you have to make sure that you apply sunscreen every single day. It doesn’t matter if you are indoors or outdoors; your daytime skincare routine should always end with a layer of sunscreen. Following this step will help all your other skincare products to work better.
2. Regular Visits To The Dermatologist
Some things are just better left to the professionals, and your skin is also on this list. Just like it’s essential to visit your physician for general health checkups regularly, it’s also vital to periodically pay a visit to your dermatologist. Instead of trying out the trial and error method with your skincare routine, it’s better to get a professional’s advice on what products to use.
3. Try Out Chemical Exfoliation
Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and unclog your pores. That’s why exfoliation should be an essential step in your skincare routine. However, through my personal experience, I’ve learnt that sometimes physical exfoliation can do more harm than good. If you scrub your skin too hard, then you can cause microtears on your skin and cause a lot of damage. That’s why it’s best to stick to chemical exfoliators (products that contain AHAs or BHAs). Chemical exfoliators gently and evenly exfoliate your skin, that’s why they’re the better option.
4. Clean Your Makeup Brushes
This one is probably a no-brainer, dirty makeup brushes = breakouts. This new year, take a vow to be responsible for the health of your skin and make sure to clean your dirty makeup brushes regularly. Washing them every once a week is an excellent place to start. Later you can work up to washing them after every two uses.
5. Follow The 60-Second Rule
Your cleanser is the only part of your skincare routine that doesn’t stay on your face, that’s why you should give it at least 60 seconds to do its job. If you want to know more about the 60-second rule, then find more information here.
6. Throw Out Expired Products
You’d be lying if you said you’ve never used a makeup/skincare product past its expiry date. We all tend to ignore the expiry date of our personal care products thinking, “if I use it just for a few more days, it won’t make much of a difference!”. It’s about time we stop taking expiry dates so lightly and save our skin the trouble of infections and breakouts.
7. Don’t Pick At Your Skin
I’ve learnt this the hard way—don’t ever pop a pimple. Even though it might be tempting to squeeze the hell out of that sucker, not touching it is the best thing you can do. (Ain’t nobody got time for scars).
