There is nothing about Deepika Padukone that doesn’t fit the mould. After her debut in Bollywood as Shanti Priya in Om Shanti Om, she was hoisted as Bollywood’s next big actress who’s here to make her mark and stay. Through her film choices over the years like Cocktail, Bajirao Mastani, Piku to name a few, which were loved by audiences and critics alike, she climbed the ladder of success and is amongst the leading ladies of the current time.
And now as the actress’s next project, Chhapaak is all set to release in January, with the trailer which was launched today, we cannot help but notice how Deepika has picked an important subject like acid attack at this stage in her career creating a social impact, which is much needed.
Chhapaak is real-life story based on an acid-attack survivor. After winning accolades for her work on films like Raazi and Talvar, director Meghna Gulzar is helming this project bringing forth Laxmi’s story on the big screen. Claimed to be one of the sexiest women in the world, to play the role of an acid attack survivor, is a huge challenge on Deepika’s hands. It is also Padukone’s break from the classic, safe mould she seems to have mastered.
Given the importance of the subject of the film and it is a story that needs to be told, after hearing the story, Deepika decided to not just act in it but also made it her maiden production under her newly found production banner, Ka Productions. The subject of acid attack is a significant issue to be touched upon and addressed because of the cases that come to light every now and then, in fact, some don’t even get reported.
Forming an NGO to spread awareness is one thing, but communicating the same via one of the most powerful mediums –the film is a challenging role that Deepika daringly picked up. Well, the actress is known to take up challenging roles and showcase them on the celluloid to the T.
Now that we have witnessed this hard-hitting trailer, we cannot wait to watch this one.
