The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced this Saturday, 6th July 2019, that India’s pink city, Jaipur, is now a World Heritage Site.
The beautiful 292-year-old city is studded with lavish, 17th Century palaces erected by its famous Rajput Maharajas, and is known for its iconic architecture, historic forts, and lively culture. It is the second Indian city (after Ahmedabad) to be featured on this prestigious list.
The 43rd session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) hosted in Baku, Azerbaijan started on 30th June and will go on till 10th July. The Chairperson of the World Heritage site, Mr. Abulfas Garayev, announced the decision. Jaipur was first nominated in 2015, and Bengali architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya designed its campaign that ultimately led to its selection.
The United Nations India tweeted their sheer delight.

It is a proud moment for all Indians! The Indian representative at the conference stated:
The credit is rightly theirs, the men and women of Rajasthan, who have nurtured and protected their culture for generations.
Some of the most beautiful sites in Jaipur are its iconic forts, bazaars, city palaces and of course, the Hawa Mahal.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot was beyond grateful and proud, as evident in his tweet.
It is a matter of great pride that our #PinkCity, #Jaipur has been declared as a #WorldHeritage site by @UNESCO .
It will add to the glory of capital city of #Rajasthan.— Ashok Gehlot (@ashokgehlot51) July 6, 2019
