I know what you’re thinking, “These skincare trends are pushing it! There’s the line between innovation and straight-up crazy!” Well, at least that was my first thought when I heard about doing Gua Sha with spoons. I know that practising Gua Sha with a traditional stone has many benefits. Although, you can only imagine my confusion when I found out that you can also use spoons to practise this ancient Chinese tradition.
After doing some research, I found out that the shape and build of a spoon and a traditional stone are very similar. So using a spoon will basically give you the same results as a traditional stone would and also help you save some money. Here’s why you should start practising Gua Sha with a spoon ASAP:
- It improves the blood circulation in your face, hence giving you a natural glow.
- This practice will also gently exfoliate your skin and firm your facial muscles.
- It aids in lymphatic drainage.
Here’s how you can easily practise Gua Sha with a spoon:
1. Grab A Spoon
Choose a tablespoon if you want to cover large areas and choose a teaspoon if you want to cover smaller areas. Just make sure that whichever one you choose has a blunt edge so it won’t hurt you during the Gua Sha process. If you use a spoon that’s been sitting in the refrigerator, it’ll give you better results as it’ll also de-puff your skin and reduce any redness simultaneously.
2. Learn Your Zones
There are 6 zones on your face that you should be covering and they are:
- Upper Forehead: This is the area just below your hairline.
- Lower Forehead: The area that is right above your eyebrow.
- Zygomatic: This is the area that’s on your zygomatic bone (cheekbone).
- Labial: The area that’s right below your cheekbone.
- Chin: The area that’s adjacent to your lips.
- Jawline: The area on the jawline bone.
3. Nighttime Routine
This Gua Sha routine works best when you allow your skin to rest after you are done. Hence, it’s better to do this routine at night after you’ve completed your nighttime skincare routine. So after you’ve applied all your serums and oils, your skin will be prepped for some Gua Sha action.
4. Massage The Area
After you’ve got your spoon and prepped your skin, you’re ready to practise the Gua Sha routine. Take your spoon from the blunt edge and start stroking your skin from the upper forehead zone. Remember to make sure that your strokes are made in an upward circular fashion. Use gentle pressure* and make sure to cover each zone 10 times.
*Note: Don’t massage the area around your eye and know that a little bit of redness is completely normal.
Aaaand you’re done. Repeat this process every night. Just with these 4 simple and easy steps, you’ll get fresh and rejuvenated skin.
