How To Calm Yourself Down When You Are Feeling Anxious

Suruchi Patwary

A lot of times we find ourselves stressing over events that are impending. Your heart thumps loudly, you feel like you’re about to have a heart attack and the whole world is coming down. But the truth is, it’s all happening in your head. And while it’s always easier said than done, a little practice of reminding yourself this truth whenever you feel anxious could really prove to be helpful and improve the situation. But this practice is something that will have a slow and gradual effect on you.

Going through such moments of panic and anxiety very often, I looked around for some quick tips, tricks and things to remind yourself at such times that can help ease down people when they feel anxious. And these are the ones that I found.

1. Why Worry Now?

Most of the times, we feel anxious about something that is going to happen in the near or far future. But the discomfort starts way before the actual event takes place. And this way, you basically put yourself through the situation multiple times before it actually happens. So, here’s what you can do…

2. Stay In The Present.

Feeling anxious is a result of future-oriented fear, so you need to remind yourself to stay in the present. The present surrounding is under control and you’re safe in it. Whatever is making you feel anxious isn’t happening at the moment. Practice reeling yourself back in the real time zone to feel calmer when the anxiety hits you.

3. Deconstruct Your Thoughts.

When you’re feeling anxious, you’re in a way imagining the worst-case scenarios that probably won’t even happen. So, check if your thoughts are realistic. For instance, if you’re anxious about an interview with someone, remind yourself that ‘you’re fine, some things may go well and some things won’t, but that is fine. You’re prepared and ready for it, irrespective’.

4. Just Breathe.

Focus on your breathing. Breathe in and breathe out slowly and deeply. This will help slow down your brain and re-centre it. You don’t need to learn any particular breathing techniques or exercises, just inhale and exhale.

Apart from these things, you can also shift your focus on other things to break the trail of your thoughts. Throw away a piece of trash, take a walk, sit up straight. Also, try to stay away from sugar as it triggers anxious thoughts. Do you know of any other ways of how to calm down while feeling anxious? Let us know about them in the comments below.
