Storing food items can be tricky as so many factors are involved like the temperature, sunlight exposure, and many more. Also, not every food item can be stored in the same way. Some go bad in a couple of days while some can be stored for years and even centuries. Also, the majority of people believe storing most of the food items in the refrigerator is the best option. But that isn’t the truth. So, here’s a list of 5 of the most common food items we’ve all been storing in the fridge and doing more damage than good. Take a look.
1. Berries
If you’ve purchased fresh berries, you should keep in mind that they already have a very short shelf life. So, if you wish to retain their taste in the best form, leave them out of the fridge and consume them within a couple of days of purchasing.
2. Avocados
If you’re not buying a fully ripe avocado and prefer them ripening while in the storage, we’d suggest you let them be on the counter and not in the fridge. This way, the avocado retains its buttery texture and great taste. The reason behind this is an avocado ripens slowly and lasts longer in the fridge but loses some of the fruit’s flavour in this long process.
3. Peaches
A perfectly ripe peach tastes the best but storing them in the fridge can result in losing the juicy freshness. Let the peaches ripe on the kitchen counter instead of in the fridge. But if you do wish to store them for a longer duration, freezing is the better option.
4. Tomatoes
Most of us have a habit of storing our tomatoes in the refrigerator, but have you ever noticed how grocery stores keep them? They’re always stored outside the fridge, never inside. The reason? As per the National Academy of Sciences, storing tomatoes in the fridge could actually cause loss of flavour, firmness, and mealiness. And not just this, but keeping store-bought tomatoes in the refrigerator could result in uneven ripening and decay of them. Let your tomatoes sit at room temperatures to keep them flavourful and fresh.
5. Watermelons
If you thought the best way to store a watermelon is inside the fridge, wait till you hear us out. Unless you’ve already sliced open the watermelon, the right way to keep it in it’s tastiest form is letting it sit on the counter. Let the watermelon ripe on the counter instead of riping in the fridge. Room temperature is the best temperature for storing uncut watermelons.
