Dogs and kids make the perfect combination, don’t you think? Having a dog around while growing up helps children learn empathy, kindness and helps develop a wider understanding of the emotions of animals. Which is why, when people plan to have a child or have young children at home, they think it is the best time to welcome a pet dog into their family.
But, just as humans have different personalities, so do dogs. While you can expect some typical characteristics belonging to each type of breed, it also majorly depends on their upbringing. You could get home the mildest breed of dog known but if it is not taken care of properly, it could turn into a completely different dog. Which is why, to help you understand which breeds are more suitable for families who have small children, we have listed some of them down.
1. Bulldogs
Bulldogs are known to have a love for children and have a friendly, obedient and submissive nature. They also adjust well in small-sized apartments, which is another huge issue faced by dog owners. They have a genetic strong build which is good enough to scare away a threat. This maybe explains why they are not the barking types too. And don’t worry about bringing a bulldog home with other pets, they will get along quite well.
2. Boxers
This breed was originally bred to be guide dogs. Which is why you will find them very alert, athletic and strong. They are also known to have a special kind of love for children and crave attention.
3. Golden Retrievers
One of the strongest qualities of this breed is that they have a lot of patience and are far from being aggressive. These are the two key points when they have to be around children. Nonetheless, these traits can be better developed when they are introduced to training at an early stage itself.
4. Beagles
Beagles, on the other hand, are full of mischief and naughtiness. But that does not mean harm. They are a happy-go-lucky kind of breed and can be the perfect companion for not just kids but all age groups. Your kids will love training their beagles and rewarding them with yummy dog treats!
5. Poodles
If your kid suffers from an allergy, your first thought while getting a dog home would be all the hair it will shed which could be risky for your child. For such families especially, poodles are the perfect match. They hardly shed any hair. This breed is also known to have a lot of patience and caring nature., along with intelligence.
6. Pugs
Did you know pugs the sole purpose of breeding pugs was to provide companionship to humans? They make excellent family dogs and are known to have a nice temperament. But still, every dog is different irrespective of the breed they belong to, so make sure you pick the one that will suit your lifestyle.
7. Labradors
One of the most popular breeds, Labradors are known to have a friendly nature and being loving animal pets. Don’t differentiate among the yellow, brown and black ones. They are all equally sweet!
8. Mongrels
Also, each mongrel or desi dog has a different personality and a set of characteristics, depending on their parents’ breeds. But as we mentioned earlier, it majorly depends on how you bring them up and how well you train them. They, too, are one of the best matches for kids. I grew up with two mongrels and I couldn’t have asked for a better companion.
You also need to keep in mind that you cannot solely rely on the breed because of their known traits. While the overall conduct of the breeds will depend upon their genes, you need to make sure they are provided training at the right age and receive a loving upbringing.Which of these breeds do you agree the most about being perfect for children?
