A lot of factors define a person’s success. There are many attributes and personality traits that help in personal growth and evolution. On the contrary, there are many things that lead to failure, too. Like pessimism, narcissism, greed and ego. Let’s focus on ego for a minute because it’s one of the prime reasons why people tend to fail even though they’re talented and hard working. Like Osho rightly said “Love is happy when it is able to give something. The ego is happy when it is able to take something.” The ego can destroy everything if not controlled. And on that note, we thought we’d help you out with a few things that might help in curbing the ego. Scroll down for more deets.
1. Do something nice for a subordinate
Go out of your way to do something nice for your team member or even a stranger on the street. It will help you become a bit more humble. Even a random act of kindness will make you feel so good, you’ll hopefully forget all about your ego.
2. Tell someone something you’ve been keeping in for long
A lot of times, we don’t tell someone what we really feel because our ego doesn’t permit us to express our true views. Try and be your genuine self for a change and see where it takes you!
3. Let someone else talk for a change
How about—listen! Let someone else complete their chain of thought and actually step back and hear them out. That’ll open them up more and trust you with their ideas.
4. And really listen to them
Don’t just pretend to listen, because that’s not helping anyone. In fact, listen to understand, not to reply. This will help you learn new things too. What’s the point if everyone talks, no ones listening?
5. Step down if you have to
If encouraging someone else means that you need to step down, then do it! Stepping down definitely helps in curbing the ego and facing reality.
6. Compliment someone
Appreciate someone else’s work often, give credit when credit is due and compliment someone whenever you get the chance! These actions will help you stay rooted and will make the opposite person more confident and proactive in their approach.
7. Put yourself in the other person’s shoes
Egoistic people cannot see anything beyond themselves. Especially in a specific situation, it is imperative to see things from both sides of the spectrum. This way, one can make a fair decision.
8. Maybe avoid using the word “I” often
It cannot always be about you. So, stop making everything about yourself and try and look at things from another person’s perspective.
9. Stop complaining
Life is amazing if you look at it positively. So, stop complaining and be grateful for what you have. That’ll help you stay grounded.
10. Embrace the art of letting go
Hanging on to something will only keep you from going ahead in life. Your ego will also feed on this emotion and that’ll just put you on a negative trip. Just let things go and you’ll feel much lighter than before.
Don’t let ego destroy what you’ve taken years to build—your awesome personality! There’s no harm in having a good amount of self-respect. But ego? That’s a different ballgame altogether. Make sure you know the diff!
